I think I will call Bob this weekend and get this frontend to him. Any idea when, on the trip up to get the motor and drop it off?

Kevin (Orange70) stopped by earlier today and dropped off a present for me!!! ;D ;D If javtwotone's "looking for someone to give it to" offer still stands for the glass-hood, Orange70's interested... would it be possible to have it at SC397's place when I drop off my old 360 engine and this front-end, and pick up the new engine he's built for me... and we can throw the hood in the truck too?

Hey! With this latest snow fall, we could flip it over and chain it to the tractor and drag it like a sled. It will be fun!! Can I have the first ride!? I honestly did this in '75 with my first '69 AMX hood. Chained it up to the FARMALL H and gave my brothers a sleigh ride. It was backed it to by a fuel oil truck and bent down a little. I bought a brand new one with slightly damaged corners from the dealership for $80.00. What a dumass I was. Since then, I have fixed hoods ten times worse.

We do the lids from the dumsters behined the shoping stores. With a Yugo and some rope, our youth was not wasted. No broken bones, but the occasional bush was victim to our fun. You can get big air off a small shrub. ;D

Kevin (Orange70)... just so you're aware, I'll be making the run to Michigan May 8-13... and will bring back the hood then.

I guess it's like a bad dream that you try to forget, but I keep forgetting to finish this story.... the suspension has been installed since late June, after starting the project in April. After assuring Alfano that I just wanted some info, he agreed to talk to me about this stuff. He was very leery, but gave me the little bits of info I needed to proceed without worrying that there was some critical info that I wasn't aware of. I told him I was not looking to bash his stuff, and for the most part it was fine, but the motor mounts and upper control arms were shit. First up, both motor mounts were for the passenger side. I contacted him to see if he had a drivers side, and told him I wasn't asking for a freebie or a swap, that I would pay for it. He didn't have one, and said it would be a week or so since he had to dig up the prints for it and have it made. A month later, I gave up... I didn't want to modify his stuff, but I tried to install the right side mount so I could keep making some progress, but it would have pushed the fan into the shroud from being too long. So I modified both of them to fit right. I was pissed at myself for not taking more measurements before I took the car apart, because I was SURE they would have that much right..... Lunch is over, so I will have to continue the rest of this story later.

I was kinda wondering if anyone ever made it work.

Oh it works.... just a lot of screwing around to get there. After the motor mount mess came the upper control arm bullshit. the "arms" of the control arms weren't parallel to each other, so to get them to fit in the opening you had to adjust them just right. so now they fit in the hole, except that since they weren't parallel the bolts wouldn't go all the way through. the arms weren't the same, or even mirrors of each other, so I just guessed as to a left or right hand orientation. Had to heat them and bend them to the correct spacing. the ends weren't the same width as the stock arms, so I made the spacing match the middle of the opening, so I could use shims on it for camber adjustment. Straightening the arms made them too long, so I also had to shorten them an inch. Adjusting the control arms meant jacking up the car, putting on stands, jacking it up from the lower control arm, then removing the upper arm bolts. this was necessary since the coilover spring hit the upper arm at full droop... As you can imagine, this got very old very quickly. By the time I was done I could adjust both arms and have it back on the ground in about 6 minutes.. Did a garage floor alignment and kept screwing with it until it went down the road straight. SERIOUSLY.... put 60 bucks in gas through it before I took it in for the "real" alignment. I suspected a slight camber issue, but I wanted to be sure. After I got the readings, I only had to adjust one arm on the right side upper for it to be perfect. I did the adjustment at home, since after I described how you had to adjust the upper control arms, the Alignment Tech wanted no part of that shit.

I know it handles really good. I just had a hard time with the manual steering. I'm old.....remember?

Anyone purchase the Control Freak kit to comment on, and compare to, the Alfano parts?

Norm (390spirit) has the CF stuff under his Spirit and is very pleased with it. A few other guys do as well. A clearly superior product.

A fellow here in town bought a '69 AMX off Ebay with a CF front end. His single complaint was that it was manual steer only. My interest would be in getting the pieces I want, not the whole kit. Thanks for replying. Steve
