Progress: 8. 390/401 Jeep Guy. In the Clean room ready to assemble.... still! 53. dcheek45: Extreme Farm Guy Technology in the making. We got the rebuilt oil pump back so we should be able to make some more progress... soon. Need to take a 12 pack of Blue over to Javtwotone's to see what else we need to do. Geeze it just totally sucks going over to his place. I have to help him drink all of that beer, we have to talk about cars and women and chit. It is tough but, I will make it through it. 54. NEJoe's390#2: I think that I have all of the parts to get the machining going. 55. MySC/360...360. At the machine shop like... for the past 5 years (seriously) 56. team5050... 426 stroker street engine. Crank is done, Need to get in que. 57. javtwotone 383 stroker: Crank sent to the machine shop... Needs to go back. He forgot to widen the journals. All is good, he will fix it. 58. JCJeep401: Block, crank, pistons at the machine shop. In que to be bored.Ordered pistons should be here soon. 59. toms71javelin 360. 360 block w/343 pistons. On hold. 60. 67RogueXCode: 343 block, 360 crank: In.... my shop! Gonna be saweet.. A nice 10/10 360 crank that just needed polished (you are welcome), Chuck said it needed rod bolts so I said yea, did you get them yet to which he replied yea they are all ready installed. He said that it need one rod to make it really nice, I said which number and how early is the gate unlocked, he said #6, 7AM, Just hang it on the fence if you get there early. I left him 2 to choose from. It all worked out. Need to pick up the heads yet. 4.125" bore 3.44 stroke in a 343 block. Chuck says, I didn't know that those 343's had that big of bore. I said yea, they just stroked them to make them a 360. His response was huh. Kinda cool to hear Chuck's responses to the AMCchit. 61. DW401: In my shop less heads. Um his heads will need a lot more work than 67RogueXCode's even they are the same late model heads. Now I need to stop all progress on the shop to build this engine. 62. 401_1974_Javelin_: Solid lifter 401. In que. Needs bearings. Chuck is on it. Next in line 63. JTruck383: Pistons in house crank is at the machine shop. Need to prep a block 64. BC390: 68 390 street engine. Nothing started. 65. GT401: Gremlin street/drag car. Wants a 401 built. 61. DW401: Need to order push rods. Cleaned the block today. Took forever. I always chase every threaded hole with a tap. This 1/2-13 fluted bad boy is my fave. I wish I could find a reasonably priced set like this one. After I get all the passages cleaned, threads chased, and the block wired wheeld clean I spray a coat of Zimcron Primer on it. Not as good as etching primer but better than nothing. I will clean all of the machined surfaces with brake clean before I start assembling anything. 10: MY MACHINE engine: In the clean room just needs assembled. Need to order push rods. 8. 390/401 Jeep Guy. In the Clean room ready to assemble.... still! Need to order rocker arms, push rods. 60. 67RogueXCode: 343 block, 360 crank: Needs assembled. Roller rockers? 53. dcheek45: Finish plumbing 62. 401_1974_Javelin_: Solid lifter 401. In que. Needs bearings. Chuck is on it. Next in line 58. JCJeep401: Block, crank, pistons at the machine shop. Pistons in house. 54. NEJoe's390#2: I have all of the parts to get the machining going. 55. MySC/360...360. Rick, yes on the roller-rockers. Ignition: Pertonics III, inside a stock (looking) distributor, with a black cap, wires, and coil.

61. DW401: Same old junk.. Baby Summit cam and Engine Pro timing gear. The slot in the timing gear misses the oil hole in the cam by half a slot width. Did the usual fix to both the front and the back as well as made sure the oil passage was cleaned up. He provided the timing cover. I mocked up the dizzy and the oil pump before bolting anything together permanent. It seems to be OK except, I will have to use 2 distributor gaskets so that it doesn't bind in to the oil pump drive gear. The distributor came with a gear on it so, I am using a used OEM gear on the cam and hoping for the best. Matt Bultear told me that the poor fitting timing covers have the letter "I" stamped on it. I assume any other one before "I" would fall in to the same category. Here is one that I acquired and it does have "I" stamped on it and I can't install the distributor with the cover mounted to the engine. The plated "J" version seems OK. However if you buy one of these, be sure to run a tap through the threaded holes. They must have tightened up after plating or something because the threads were way too tight.

Boy, Rick, I don't think I would use that aftermarket timing cover, nor that non-OEM distributor gear. IMO, it's just begging for a failure. Too many horror stories that were unheard of before all this Chinese aftermarket shit became available. There's really no reason to arbitrarily change out that cover.

I hear ya... this guy provided the parts so, I will try to make it work. At least I didn't give him the Crown cam gear that I have.

61. DW401: I had it all put together and on the starting stand. Started to fill it up with water and watched it run out the cracks in the heads. Both sides. Started it up anyway to make sure everything was OK. Pulled the heads and took them to the machinist along with another pair. Neither he or I could see the cracks before they were all machined up. I will be making a system to check them from now on.. 8. 390/401 Jeep Guy. In the Clean room ready to assemble Kinda cool, this is a '70 block with the special numbers *3C962 70*

OK Reb, will do! It if weren't for bad luck.................note the oil running out of the center tapped hole in the head nearest the block. My machinist was kind enough to turn this second pair of heads around in 3 days and didn't even charge me for drilling the broken bolts out and installing helicoils. From past experience, I always clean out all of the taped holes and make sure I install the heads so the questionable ones are to the back. I don't know if this is good or bad in his case. The guy is going to run a 727 and that hole is needed only for the locating tab on the kick down bracket. I was able to stop the leak with a bolt, nylon washer and a steel washer but that eliminates that hole as a locating hole. I have a fix in mind for that as well.... What the hell, I might as well donate more of my time to the cause. For the heck of it I dug out a junk head and drilled through that hole to see how deep it would go before hitting water. Then I drilled it out to 7/16" dia. and sure enough, it breaks in to the cross through head bolt hole. You can't really see it in the picture. Always learning something.

Just make sure it's not in the same county, when you start assembling mine. ;D
