I dont have a big complaint about having a .78 od ratio. Not a bunch of difference in comparison to a common .82 or a .74....a strong Advantage of a gearvendors is the ability to shift into over in any gear. Why i think thats cool is this. There is NO other transmission option available that can give you the advantage of a torque convertor to compund torque at low revs, offer a full six forward ,closely spaced ratios AND overdrive. You gotta pull out the calculator to appreciate that. Say i had a 2.23 low four speed and 4.11s. That gives a 9.16 hole gear and a 4.1 top gear.... now lets do a 2.7 low 904...times 3.54 rear.. thats a deeper 9.58 hole gear WITH double breakaway torque( convertor) AND six close ratio gears AGAIN WITH convertor advantage! And i get to cruise home with a 2.76 top gear. So i just whipped your close ratio four speed 4.11 gear drivetrain’s ass out of the hole, and on the hiway home. Lets recap through the gears. 9.58 low, chirp, 7.45 2nd, chirp , 5.46 third, chirp,4.47 fourth, chirp 3.55 fifth, 2.77 hi gear.

Your so in luck. Since gearvendors loves amc’s so much, they make a kit for a amc t-10, that is basically the same thing, just better since the gear vendors od is a bulletproof 1200 hp rated, and you get 8 speeds. I dont think it would be that good on a close ratio as ratios get too close. ...and Its not as compact as the vett4+3 , but it still fits the amc tunnel. Another cool thing is once you have a gearvendors od, you can swap it to any other trans for the cost of the adapter kit, i have a 2.78 low ford toploader that would really like the gearvendors...

I've been wanting a GV OD for some time now. They pop up used on CL every now and then, but they go quick. One of these days I'll snag one.

They have been saying that for at least 10 years now...

Well i dont know...It sounds cool but most sales pitches do. I got sucked into the hype and i shouldnt play whore for gearvendors... I guess i’ll just swing and miss and forget about it. It would cost about 3500$ and i aint really feelin it. Probably just stick with the stock trans and 2.87’s. Nothing ventured nothing lost. Just doing some heavy mental masterbation. Gotta keep on track with the stock 304 gameplan.

Well i scored two standard bore 304 blocks. One is a 70 the other is a 79. Got the cranks, the 79 is std/std, the other crank is torqueflite flange and may be out of a 360. Also got the 79 damper. 200 $ for it all. Got my heads back , with 1.84/ 1.50 manley raceflows, dual springs and chromoly retainers, machined for guideplates and studs, all ready for the crane hydraulic roller. Traded some vortec heads for the labor. So the next 304 upgrade is on its way!

Well its finished painted and the full monte is installed. So not too mich happenin there. Engine and trans is in there, kinda slowed down now, waiting on a fuel pressure regulator on backorder from scummit , wasting some time trying to get the air conditioning system piece together, problems with pulleys and brackets and new make do chinese components.. but gotta have a/c on this tuna cruiser, gotta be wife freindly as its my pussywagon and cruise machine😎.,BUT... getting into the hundred degree days now, didnt make my window to getting her running before my midsummer. Getting close though. Gotta get a return type fuel system in, p/s hoses, moving battery to trunk due to rot in battery tray area, not a lot to finish up and get the stock 79 304 on the road. Texas heat gots me slowed down now . Time for some pictures i guess. So header topic has stalled out, but the next step in 304 power is gaining momentum. Yeah not gonna be a tire shredder but its gonna be entertaining to me😉

Also ... reeled in a 3.15 twin grip rear. Not sure if its any good yet. Gotta go rip it out of a car. But its paid for and mine all mine😎 So the current combination of the nonrunning zero performance spud’s javelin street edition stock 79 304 longblock includes these performance cheats- homemade headers and dual exhaust, stock 998 trans with six banger t/c, performer intake with 600 eddy carb, recurved stock distributer with add on allison electronic ignition, .... well thats it. Not much else to boost power... for now.

Well i fired up the 304 today. Started on the first crank. It should have for as much time as i took installing it. Runs fine and idles smooth with good oil pressure. Love it! Only bitch so far is the chinese “ pioneer “ brand flexplate has a really noisey ring gear. Don’t get one of these pieces of shit, it makes a ton of noise when you crank on it.

My Son bought a Pioneer fork for his truck. Total scrap. It bent and chewed up the throw out bearing.

Welp this flexplate sucks ass. I cant live with the gear noise, and the balance sucks too. Anyone got a decent 304 to torqueflite flexplate they dont particularly need?
