Really, how much more clear could I have made it... You bring beer and pizza when you dyno a AMC engine at Chuck's. It is a tradition. I brought the beer so where was the pizza!? We had no pizza!!.. Pretty simple request.. Welp we (Chuck and Brian) tuned the 343 all night anyway. Finally got the timing and advance right and then spent like 4 pulls setting the carb. It did make 292 horsepower and 370 #/ft of torque before 5 grand. Respectable but, I was hoping for 300 HP. Keep in mind that it does have ported Free Flow manifolds and 2 foot chunks of 2 1/2" pipe. The best part of the evening was meeting Bob's brother Ed. Well, he got part of it right and did bring a couple of beers and he was entertaining talking about the old race days. I did have a great time with those guys. So, what now? Tomorrow night we hit her again. I want to strap some headers on her in hopes of making that 300 horse. What can I say, Ed wanted in the picture.. Chuck doin his thing... One of the many dyno pulls..

Brother Ed says that back when he and Chuck were racing partners, Chuck always wanted him to leave the line at 10grand... so if it made 292HP at 5 grand, it should be good for 584HP when buzzed all the way... right? ;D
Never thought of it that way.. Maybe tonight we will run her up to 10grand and see what happens! Naa, it will be more fun if we just surmise and argue about it. We wouldn't want to confuse anyone with actual data.. Kind of interesting to me, the horsepower and torque ratings of a 1970 360 4bbl was 290HP and 390#/ft. The 368 does have less compression but, I would have thought that the better intake, slightly bigger cam, and better exhaust manifolds would have made up the difference. We were close on horsepower but the 390#/ft torque rated for the 360 vs our 370#/ft is a little confusing. Here are results for Fast401's 401 with dual quad 500 cfm Edelbrock carbs. on a Offy intake. 10.2:1. Isky 280HL. 224/224 @.050, .490 lift, 108 LS. Free Flow Manifolds (ported): 366.2 Hp @5050 401 #/ft @ 3800 Edelbrock Shorty Headers: 368.7 Hp @5250 411 #/ft @ 4300 Hedmand Long Tube Headers: 382.0 Hp @5050 430 #/ft @ 4300 In both cases the torque ratings are higher than what we are getting. Hell I don't know, I am still learning.
Interesting results tonight. Post 1980 Jeep manifolds unmodified: 270 HP, 365#/ft Ported Free Flow Manifolds: 292 HP, 370#/ft Headmond 1 5/8" Headers: 294 HP, 372#/ft Really!!?? The headers didn't make much of a difference? Chuck believes that it is being choked down by the carburetor. Jeep Post 1980 manifold. We must have had at least 10 pulls between last night and tonight. Here is the last one with headers.

I'm with Chuck on this one... too small of a carb. Such a small HP-variance with all of those different exhausts tells me that all of the air that went into the engine is getting out just fine (even with the logs)....
It is, what it is. And I think Rick did a hell of a job building what I asked for. My target was that it had to look bone-stock... run on normal pump-gas, work well in front of an automatic-transmission, and not rattle my teeth loose. I had no desire for: "I gotta have 600hp, with the baddest thump possible... so that I can haul my lawn-chairs to the next show-and-shine"...
Second one up is JC401 for his Jeep to play on the sand hills. Well, NEJoe did a fine job on the carb. No major tweaking just adjust the fuel air mixture and adjust the idle.... no shit. Interesting evening.. first off, there is no way I can walk in the shop on dyno night with out beer and pizza. So I HAD to deliver.. It is expected... It was a good night. Of coarse Chuck had to leave early but he didn't go until it was running to his satisfaction. Pride in workmanship, that is what Chuck is about. So once we got things under control this combination of parts made 409 HP 5150 rpm and 460 #/ft of torque at 3600 rpm. The torque and horse power nosed off after that. A little surprized at that given the cam specs Lunati cam .527/.547, 226/234 @ .050" 110 but, the dyno don't lie. This thing will pull the ass hole out of a bear if need be.. Oh, the mechanical fuel pump ain't going to get it. 10 psi at idle and 3 psi when you need it. [URL=http://s625.photobucket.com/user/SC397/media
I had the same fuel pressure problems on my amx with the carter mechanical pump. It had a drastic drop around 5500-6000 rpm's. Not wanting to add a electric pump, i decided to give the RobbMc. mechanical pump a try. They are pricey for a mechanical pump, but gotta tell ya talk about a quality piece...and no mo pressure problems. BTW.. what kind of jeep is this going in? ;D

javtwotone: Saw an Eagle wagon and SX/4 at the start of Power Tour. Wondering if I would see anything else, then a fresh barn find Marlin (smelled like it too) and a '69 two-seater with a retro theme. In the outside lot was a Pacer wagon with aluminum slots, kinda sad
