Lol, thanks for finding that video Rick! I was wondering why that dude was spending so much time around the car and never asked about it. 😁 I got to the track Friday morning at 9am to see several trailers and cars submerged in the lake in the pits. They dropped their cars off early on Thursday to return in the morning to this: 20190913_091515 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr The rain stopped by 2pm and the track crew did an awesome job of drying the track so we could run qualifying until 8pm. The tower keeps track of all the time trials, and your best time is your qualifying time. You get paired up with whoever ran closest to your time. Then on Saturday you run a best 2 out of 3 shootout with your pairing. That's what you see in the video. I only qualified with a 13.78 in the thick humidity on Friday, so the car REALLY picked up on Saturday with cool dry air. There were only 3 AMC's racing. John Becker's 1968 AMX, my 1970 AMX, and Larry Weymouth's sc390 Hornet. But, we had a great club member turnout in the pits Saturday for the show. 20190914_163902 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20190914_130535_HDR by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20190914_130503_HDR by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr

That was awesome. More than half the vid went to talking up that Poncho. Nice job with that AMX, Joe.

The goat had ram air and it was a big deal. The amx had ram air and it was not mentioned. The goat has this the goat had that. It has like 300 more pounds of ass than the amx, it obviously made better horsepower too, since it was behind the whole way, was heavier, but had a little higher trap speed. The lighter , better launching amx had the upper hand . The goat just couldnt catch up. But thats what wins at the dragstrip. First outa the hole usually prevails. So lets get to the point joe. Tell is about the tires , first gear, and how you were so far ahead at 300 ft. Im guessing you have the 2.43 low trans.

He talks about all the dealer installed stuff including ram air, but I thought the rules allowed only factory built cars. Hence no group 19 parts or Randall Gremlin for us... Yes, the double standards exist even at this race.
I still run the 2.23 trans Spud. Last year it had 4.10's and crossed the finish line at 5500 rpm. I swapped in 3.91's to get the revs down to 5200 and it feels happier but lost 60'. Ideally I'd like the 2.43 trans with the 3.91 to get starting line ratio around 9.50 and keeps the revs where they are.
Most of my advantage is just comfort driving the car. I cruise it often out on back roads usually at WOT and am very familiar with the clutch, shifter, shift points, etc. Alot of the guys at this race bring the car out once a year, and honestly just fumble at the whole process. Not that I'm a great driver, just practice alot more than they do lol.

Becker is gonna get a 2.43 low trans from me. I think he is planning on putting together a late javelin. The 2.23 low has the best gear ratio progression. The 2.43 low is ok, but second is too low, so you are in it shortly before yo have to upshift to third. The 2.64 low , third is too short, you shift to high quickly. Other than that the 2.64 low is “ ok” if your needing a good 300 ft time. It the weakest as far as ability to take a hard launch however... none of the common three ratios are stellar... i have never seen the two very rare ratio’d trans they speak of in performance american style... very curious about them. ..Driving the car often is a major plus. I know from racing a 4 speed the clutch release on launch is THE biggest factor in a succesful run, particularly in a taller first gear small tire chassis. Racing brackets on a regular basis help to keep this critical technique from getting rusty. I see a lot of redline tires... are they coker ? and do they have a soft formulation? Most of us arent gifted drivers. A well practiced driver is next best thing. Throughout the years i saw the same guys regularly practice their 4 speed technique in the bracketed musclecar challenge, and they regularly bested seasoned bracketeers.
