After thinking about it for a minute, I've concluded that he's just trying to pass off a 3.15 open for a 4.10 LS, and wants plausible deniability. Otherwise, he'd pull the inspection cover and verify exactly what is inside. I think I'll call him tomorrow and see if he'll let me pull the cover before I plunk down the cash. Just to see what he says.

Hi, I'm interested in the AMC 20 rear end from a '69 AMX show car that you have advertised on your website. I'd like to know if I can come down there ( I live in Kelso) and pull the inspection cover and verify what is inside before I plunk down the cash? In other words, if it is a Power-Lok (vs a Twin Grip or open diff) with a gear set 3.15 or better, I'll pay your full $375 asking price.

Well, I just got back from down south. The rear end turned out to be an open diff. He was like "fuck, you'd think a 4spd AMX would have a posi." I guess not all of 'em did. At any rate, he pointed me to another rear end that he had sitting there. Popped the cover, lo and behold, a genuine Spicer Power-Lok. 2.87 gears, leaf spring rear end. $250 I couldn't get him to come down on the price, but offered to throw a set of 3.15 gears in on the deal, so I bought it. He's actually nice enough guy to deal with. I'd buy from him again if he had something I needed at an acceptable price.

The power lock is a really good posi. 4.10’s are not fun 95 percent of the time. I would opt for some 3.54’s or 3.31’s and a 3000 ish stall convertor. 3.15’s are great as long as you are not at the track. 3.54’s and 3.73’s are great with an overdrive. 4.10s basically suck without an overdrive or 30 “ rubber. 24 inch drag rubber and 28” street rubber is fine for 3.54’s. Choose your ratio carefully grasshopper.

IMO, he's a dyed in the wool AMC guy trying to make a few extra funbux to fund his projects. He didn't seem to posses a very deep technical knowledge of these things. He actually does own the race car on his website, so credit for that. But yeah, if someone had bought it and had it shipped, it would have been a massive ass-ache for them.
3.15 with a wide ratio top-loader might not be an untenable combo. Or a TKO with a steep first gear. I'm just happy about getting a real Power-Lok for what I would consider a reasonable price. Anybody need a leaf spring housing?
