As with any project, this one is snowballing right on schedule. With the automatic, I could ignore the leaks. Dropped the M11 out yesterday. Picked up the engine to address the pissing rear main. Pan leaks all the way around anyhow. See signs of coolant following the pan rail, so my son starts taking the front apart to address the cover gasket. I was waiting to be surprised when I popped the cover. Holy shit, a double roller. By the looks of the ancient blue silicone, I figure it was over 20 years. Figured, ok, water pump looks crusty so might as well do that too. Surprise surprise, it has an oddball 4.5" tall water pump. Almost as much fun as finding a good flat crank flywheel.
I knew things looked too easy when I put the old automatic next to the 5 speed and bell and they look like the original driveshaft is going to be a slam dunk.

Gonna be a long slow winter winter project. I keep looking under the sofa cushions for change or a winning lottery ticket , but I'm the only poor bastard sitting there.

The mcleod musclecar five speed is no more. They had one in the summit showroom earlier this year. I havent been back since the fake covid fraud started and they wouldnt let me in. It might still be there . They seemed to have problems that never got resolved. Now mcleod is selling the new tremec TKX, which appears to be a superior trans. Its much sleeker than the tko and actuall fits tunnels without total hacking. It comes with only one shifter location ( so i figure it requires at least some hacking) If your considering an aftermarket five speed its the new thing. The “ legend” five speed is also either in hiding or obsolete. It looked a lot like the mcleod trans. Might have been the same i dunno. Good news is the TKX is like 500 bux cheaper. TKX looks like a real strong unit built for serious abuse. Too early to know. The mcleod and legend trans never really flew high or far that i can tell. The thing about five speeds is they dont really get raced as much as put in money pits and garage queens and pro touring freakshows that never get used, so their functionality doesnt get big evaluation.

Rick, thanks. I'll lean toward rebuild. Easier to take than 130 as I see vendor listings. Oil pump looks spotless inside. Got the rear main seal in. Funny, each time I swung the hammer I had a piece of steel fall on my. wTF??? Watch closer, coming from rear of block. HUH? Run my fingers along the ledge and I collected 7 starter drive teeth. That explains the reman starter and sprayed black flex plate.

I missed that topic. Very nice on that rebuilding, Rick. I agree that's the way to go.

The rebuilder is a normal hard working old school dude as well which makes you appreciate him even more. He works in a small garage that is just packed with every kind of water pump imaginable.

I know my pump isn't original by the lack of part number. There's number cast in I've seen before on the rad hose inlet. M061. Don't recall who's it was.

This car is like an archeological dig. At some point in time, the timing set was swapped out. By the looks of the ancient blue silicone, it was a while back. Oil pump is almost spotless. Circular scrub behind the water pump from the impeller but the shaft isn't loose. Matches the iron impeller. What I thought was an ancient replacement pump, is an original casting. A wire brush revealed the 318 part number.
