Yeah “ all i gotta do” is brave rats and roaches and hook a chain on the engine and drag it out of a garage then chuck all the valuable rat eaten trash back in. I been figuring out an easier plan 🤣 my son needs a cylinder head for his jeep, maybe this one will work. I need a block for my stroker kit. I been thinking about turbos some. Not enough to try it yet. 303 performance does make a kit for a jeep. I’m kinda nervous about the economy situation at this point. Thats a good enough excuse i figure

Oh boy what a score! I dragged a complete 1999 4.0 out of a hoarders hellhole garage yesterday. I took it home and popped the head off, it looked perfect inside, it had a blown headgasket and other than that , it was MINT. ( thats what freiburger calls really good shit)😁😁😁. The exhaust manifold(s)has some pretty turbo friendly iron manifolding, its a two piece, front three cylinders into one cone type pipe flange and back 3 holes into the same. I figure two pipes into a divided t-4 flange and bolted to a borg warner s-200sx! I saw a quick fuel 750 blower carb at the summit junk heap, i already got a clifford 4 barrel intake, i’m daydreaming way ahead i know, and its sketchy at this point but it is fun and could work🤪

Well i swapped out the v8 crossmember for a six cylinder crossmember and got The hoarder 4.0 into roadkill. Decided to focus on building the car for the road, with more focus on driveability and economy. I didnt have any wiring for the car so i got a painless wiring universal 21 circuit kit from summit. My son found a edelbrock 4.0 head on some internet site. Its supposed to be like new? Guess we will see what that means when it shows up. Not sure if it is in line with the “ economy” thing, but i dunno if it would really hurt the milage? I have been stocking up on 4.0 stuff for years, i figure i need to get some use out of it.

An aluminum head is a win is my book. Less weight, better mpg. It all adds up.

I’m going to be on the road a lot now i have a new job thats 120 miles from my old place, which is where my cars and garage is, and about 85 miles from my wifes house. So my foolish plan is to build the roadkill javelin into a long distance driver. An all porpose old beater for a fun yet sort of practical and very unique oddity to enjoy while wasting my life traveling home to work and back. I am experimenting with the 4.0 for a practical yet fun and possibly somewhat economic powerplant. Kinda like the 304 is, but with more mileage. The idea of roadkill is dont resto it, just get it running and enjoy it. I love my javelin on the hiway. Its really a special feeling cruising an old obsolete pile of crap down the road. Its kind of my way of giving the finger to everyone on the road. I know i could have just put the 4.0 and 5 speed in my green car, i just dont want to take it apart again. I’m gonna leave it 304/904.

You get good use out of it that way. Not drive 200 miles, then need a full Jesus rebuild again.
I'm glad I never swapped out my Highway gears and just stick with performer style intakes. Great for real daily use.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of daily driving an old AMC.

I dont think about it anymore. I’m out on the useless showcar useless race car head trip. Life is too short for that bullshit. Amc did all the thinking for you. Where people go completely wrong is trying to “ improve it”. If you cant drive and use a car its junk. The only use i have for a car is to drive it as a car. I dont need anything else. I could care less if it is anyone idea of fast. Its already a ragged out beater theres no doubt its junk. Why mess with a good thing. The best times i have in a javelin is rolling down the hiway. Just getting there. I want to be different. I dont wanna be the guy driving a new electronic chicom cookie cutter car.

Its been two fucking years to the day. No running roadkill. I got a ton of shit to piece together, but lacking a lot of the little things that make the car. All those little fasteners and covers and things. Waiting on parking brake cables , been backordered for months. I have lost my mind and bought some interior stuff , a carpet kit with insulation, weather seals for the doors and windows, chalk them up for creature comforts i guess. My process is Near opposite of flyburger and dulcich slapping roadkill together in a few weekends. Maybe it will pick up some progress soon. I ordered new drums for the rear brakes months ago. I found a pair off a spirit that should work. If i can find someone to turn them. I’m getting old now and its hard to just get out and hack away at it all day. I dont have years. I need this shit to run and go to work.

It's a lot easier to slap shit together in a few weekends when you have deep pockets, work on super common (relatively) stuff, have nothing better to do all day, and have a 10,000 square foot climate controlled shop to work out of.

Well all that couldnt hurt i guess. Two years sounds like a lot of time but when you break it down into how much time you can invest in it out of weekends it does shrink the window of oportunity a lot. I have gotten a few things accomplished. Just need to keep on it. I admit the past couple years with all the SHIT going on has been demotivating. I really need to focus on the big picture of getting it moving and forget about the little details. Thats a big difference in the show and my approach. They have a clear goal( burnouts) and i have the restoration mentality of getting something “ finished” ( perfect) before moving on. I just neep to start zip tying and slapping the shit together. Work on finish and details later.

The way I look at it is, once you have all the parts, it all goes together quick. We do a lot of searching for deals, so they end up being long term projects.

I have a roadkill update. I got the roadkill 4.0 running a few weekends ago. And it sucked. I thought it looked ok but well i had low compression in cylinders 1 & 2. So i yanked it out and did an autopsy. I found some small aluminum blobs at the top of the cylinders. So i removed the pan and pistons. It turns out the top rings were stuck in the grooves , at the area on the piston near the exhaust valve, and the pistons were a little melted there. Oh well. Apparantly this junk got too hot. So why do overkill on roadkill? So I busted the top rings out of 1&2, and ran a ring groove cleaner around the top groove untill a new ring fit, put two new top rings in, scrubbed 1 and 2 bores with some 320 grit emery cloth and slapped it back together. Will it work? I dunno. It dont really have too. Who cares its roadkill! A compression test revealed that 1 and 2 have umm better compression. Admittedly not as good as the rest but maybe they will break in? I am using top quality chinese parts from omix ada and crown from summit because well this might not work and why waste money on junk. Kinda like i already did i guess but minimize the bleeding. So in the next few weeks i will finish up the engine install and fire it up again.

And how. I got a JBA tri-y header on it. I bought it for my sons grand cherokee but it didnt fit. I think its really for a wrangler jeep. I dunno it fit the javelin fine. Its not a long tube header. I doubt its worth any horsepower but that doesnt matter. Its out of the garage and on a car. I also got this cool straight through 2.5 inch muffler . Someone threw it in the scrap at work. Not sure of the brand or if it muffles but its stainless and it looks good. But free sure helps. I guess i can make a 2.5 inch exhaust for overkill, but i might just go 2.25 inch. Should be good in the exhaust department i’d guess. So far the big ticket item is the tkx trans which is overkill and worth more than everything else. This project isnt about power, just mileage and utility. I honestly plan on this junk being a driver. Junk, but still a total classic 70 javelin. Worth more to me in utility alone than these bullshit computerized throw away cars nobody can fix. Nevermind how much they cost new.
