on a serious note, a buddy had a smoking 350 Buick. I did a gear oil/trans fluid mix for him. It was quiet, finally had oil pressure and stopped smoking. The guys that ended up with his Car said it was the most awesome motor ever. We just looked at each other. lol

Can you elaborate on that process? I might need to try it on my junk 401

This is about the sludgiest POS I've ever seen. I was embarrassed to take it to the machine shop and have it tanked. Plus, I didn't really want to put it in my Acura, and my Chevy's transmission needs some attention. And I hate doing anything half way, including being cheap. I had thought about just throwing it into a trashbin with some water and laundry detergent, but some years back my son had thoughtfully installed drain holes in all of my trash cans so they wouldn't fill up with rain water. What to do? I've had this roller kicking around the property for years, maybe decades, and I've never used it. The idea is to fill it with water and push it around to compact soil. Too much work. That's why I have machinery. So at any rate, my home made hot tank. Precise layout.
I was out of acetylene. Handles and lifting hooks. I had a valve, but no weld on bung, and I didn't feel like driving to town for one, so I omitted the drain for now.
Chinese quality without the hassle of a trip to Hazard Fraught.
Four lbs of laundry detergent and a couple of pounds of lye otter get 'er cleaned up. Side note; yes, the camshaft is still in it. A few of the valve guides were so stuck they wouldn't budge, and the thing is so friggin' sludged up that I can't even get the keepers out of the retainers. I'll try again after she soaks in some hot caustic.

Today I'll slap on the rain gear and wash down the block, then get the small parts in the tank. Still need to order rod bearings, cap, rotor, and points, and either a carb kit or a Chinesium reprod carb from the usual scumbags.
I'm still up in the air as to what to do with the radiator. It wasn't leaking, but if it does ever leak, the counter-weight has to come off in order to remove it. There are 8n repop radiators all over for less than $200, but this unit is 3" taller and a half inch thicker than one for a tractor. Probably won't matter for forklift duty. Local radiator shop is probably close to $400 to re-core the thing.

I know my neighbor paid over $1000 for his backhoe rad. That makes my local joint sound downright cheap. Last radiator they did for me was for my 3500HD. It is motorhome sized, bigger than what GM put in their one ton trucks, but with the inlet and outlet in a conventional location, kind of a special deal, and they charged me about $400.

Boy, there three valve seats that have some pitting, but I really don't want to haul this stupid thing down to the machine shop and get new seats installed. OTOH, I really don't want to pull the thing back out again in a year because it has a dead cylinder. I'm having a gAyMC moment here...

Exhaust seats always seem to get some pitting. Are the sealing faces of the valves straight or do they have a groove from the seats?

The exhaust valves look great, the intakes have a bit of a groove. That #3 exhaust seat looks pretty bad.

Looks runnable. Maybe not long life but probably as good as the lower end if you go cheap on that and just hone it out. Are the guides good? In not you might as well blow some money on that head.
