The engine bay was much more difficult and stubborn, and showed several scratches. I switched up to a propane torch and 1-1/4" metal putty knife, and discovered the wonder of Goo Gone for cleaning up the residue after scraping the heavy stuff. Spray it on and let it soak for 5-10 minutes, and just wipe it off. At this point I decided to just pull the suspension and fenders to access everything easier. Check out the 3" of dirt road and gravel in the troughs... 20220107_184229 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20220111_060423 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20220115_130649 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr

Slow process, but the ridiculous amount of undercoating really protected it. I am very pleased to find everything so well preserved and solid. 20220123_173310 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr So of course at this point, the seats and carpet, steering column, dash, and heater case had to come out to clean the firewall and trans tunnel properly. I made a 3' extension for the shop vac out of 1/2" steel tubing to clean the dirt out of the rocker panels through the access hole in the front. I found some grease pencil writing from the assembly line on the trans tunnel, I think it says "change hood"? 20220205_083904 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20220125_195754 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20220207_193218 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20220219_124153 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20220219_145532 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr

All the brake and fuel lines, exhaust, fuel tank, parking brake cables, etc. had to come off as I made my happy way under the floor pans. At this point, I pulled the rear axle/leaf springs to finish cleaning above the axle housing and towards to rear bumper. This is where I'm working today, almost done under the rear of the car. A few hours after work everyday, and slowly getting there. Maybe by the end of next week I'll be done with the undercoating nightmare. I welded up a 2x3 dolly to bolt to the trans cross member rails, and I'll put the rear axle back in so I can get the car into my trailer, and take somewhere for engine bay paint. I think the bottom of the car will get flat black, just to make it clean and presentable. It's going to be so much nicer to work on without that black tar goo on everything. Still, I really need my ass kicked lol. 20220219_124101 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr 20220223_184657 by Joe Pinsoneault, on Flickr

Mine is all undercoated under the hood as well. I fear the condition of my troughs cause I know the edges where it rubber is stapled on it rotted, The rest looks solid from under neath. I knew they're full of gravel as well.

I wish my floors were that clean to begin with Tony! Did you use a semi-gloss, or did the floors not need paint?

I wish my floors were that clean to begin with Tony! Did you use a semi-gloss, or did the floors not need paint? The floors were VERY clean. I used a semi-gloss black heavy duty rust paint. Good enough for a driver!

You might miss all that undercoat some day. It did its job well.

I was considering leaving the undercoating just in the rear wheel wells and trunk drop off areas, just to help reduce stone chips that could rust. The stuff is so thick and heavy right now. I'll probably clean the wheel wells, but respray a clean new coat of 3M rubberized on them. The rest I definitely won't miss when I'm working on things. It was nice of someone saving the car for me, but I'm not concerned with saving it for the next guy lol.
