Ok. The guys handle is “ thunderhead 289” and the title of his youtube vid is “ MPG TEST DAY!! Lawn mower carb on v8 (is that a record?)” … Interesting video, the kid might be on to something here. I know its unconventional, but hey it seems to work. 41 mpg out of a carbed 302 ford. Give it a look.

The precurser vid to the mpg test with more theory and nuts and bolts set up .. search “ 70 mph?! Lawn mower carb on v8 engine” ( thunderhead 289) . Watch this kid design and build his own electronic control to work a gm idle air solenoid to modulate his air fuel ratio, and its interactive with his cellphone. Definitly no idiot. Even more set up and tuning at “ will it run? Lawn mower carb vs ford 302”

This will be a interesting and fun topic. How many time have you heard the story of a (insert the car brand of choice here) that got 40 or 50 miles to the gallon in the '60's or '70's but the evil automakers and oil companies joined up to squelch it.... I will find the info but there was a local guy who had a V8 Mustang that would get some unbelievable gas mileage. He was even being sponsored by a outfit out of Australia and had a building in Wauseon Ohio. I went to the open house where there was some good questions that weren't answered. The Fish comes to mind: mikebrownsolutions.com/fish-carburetor/Of course we can't forget the Mobile Economy Runs: photos.imageevent.com/mmm_mag/autohistory/1956%20Mobilgas%20Economy%20Run%20Specail%20Interest%20Autos.pdf

he's doing what any curious kid would. experimenting. he has some impressive new tech skills going for him. the 3d printed parts and building his own interactive electronics is fantastic. i think that a/f ratio control he skitzed up is super crafty. i would pay good money for one of those. i would guess the carb he is using came from a 20 hp or better mower. he just basically drove it to 41 mpg, not really trying, it would probably get even better milage. what if it had overdrive? i know its got no power, but like he said, who needs power? how often do you need power just normal driving? making milage like that is a challenge and any challenge is fun. i bet a lot of his 236,000 followers are going to snatch up a lot of mower carbs now.

It's amazing that so many people have such stupid carb questions 400 Trillion times. The same ones over and over, they can't even Google... Then this young fella sits down and thinks, something 99% of the population can't do, and makes this work and work extremely well. This is a breath of fresh air.

I guess I need to install a 289 in my mowing machine tractor now. It only gets about 3 gallons per acre.

Yeah they had butterflys the size of quarters. Flatheads were like that too. Those old flatheads got decent milage too.

I've seen plenty claim mid 20 MPGs out of flatties, and they prolly had what, 4.10 gears?
