Unfortunately no pictures, but the conversion is going pretty well. My question is, of all the swaps and custom drivetrains I've done, I've only done cars. When dealing with driveshafts, I had the weight on the suspension and would have the slip yoke out about an inch to come up with the length. Now the Jeep will obviously be rear wheel drive only and won't see any off-road crazy angles.
So.. any reason the same method won't work?

Yea yea.. just over thinking it I guess. With the original drive shaft not having the slip yoke at the end, I started wondering if there was some big reason why (other than keeping the shaft from falling out) so I worried from there.

So I try to buy local first for the driveshaft. I have a few laying around, so I check on the price to shorten and rebalance. More than double versus a brand new one from Summit.

I can't find where I posted it but I had a drive shaft shortened and balanced in Dearborn and it was really cheap. I will see if I can find where I posted it..

Cut, Assemble U-Joint & balance Shaft. $80.95. It was done in 24 hrs. I can run it up there sometime if you want me to. It is located about 4 miles away from my girl friends house... IMG_8128 by Rick Jones, on Flickr

That's a damn good deal. The driveline in my Rebel cost me a couple of C-notes. They did install new U joints as well, but I still thought it was a little pricey.

Fleet Pride in Toledo charged me $376.00 for cutting the ends off and welding a new middle section for my Willys Aero drive shaft. Talk about getting the shaft. I won't be going back there for any more business.

I won't be going back there for any more business. Yep, I remember you talking about that, that's why I didn't bother getting a quote from them. Lay's Transmission quoted me $400 for the shorten and rebalance.. I'll keep your offer in mind for Booger, since I can modify that shaft. Didn't really want to shorten the Javelin shafts I have, and certainly wanted to leave the Jeep shaft stock to be able to go back to original if somebody wanted to. Summit gets their shafts from Fastshafts in Iowa. I called them direct, since I needed a conversion U-joint on one end and Summit doesn't offer any that way. They said no problem and were easy to work with. Ordered it Friday and had it the next Wednesday. All new with greaseable U-joints and shiny black paint. Now to see if they balanced it well..

Call the Shaftmasters and have them quote a price. I bet that you wont find one cheaper.

Nice sunny day yesterday, but cold. So I buddled up and took the Jeep for a ride. Driveline felt good, no apparent vibrations. Damn thing was even a little quieter at idle and overall. 56 less cubic inches made a difference. Best part, less than 2000 RPMs at 65 MPH..
