So this is the beginning of the story So me and my dad are very good friends and he has been a AMC fan since he was a teenager, and I was raised around AMC´s and we own a couple of cars ( two Jeep Commandos, Gremlin, Javelin and some other part cars ) and we do everything together like race, offroad ect But his dream for as long as I remember has been to own a 2 door Rambler American and has always talked about that is his dream car So I´ve been keeping this in the back of my head for a couple of years and maybe two weeks ago I bought a 1968 Rambler American that I´m gonna give him as a birthday present next year when he turns 60 The car is still in the US and has to be transported to Iceland later this year for some minor touch up on paint The car is very nice low mileage, interior is like new and it currently has a 232 but that will be replaced with a healthy 360 in the future and manual transmission But here is the deal I´m trying to find wheels and tires for this car, I know what kind of wheels I want for it (17 inch American Racing VN215 Gray Classic Torq-Thrust II wheels ) The problem I´m having is what backspace and width of wheels will fit the American ? The skinniest they offer in this particular wheel is 7" Also what tire sizes will fit the Rambler Here is a pic of the same wheels that I want to put on his car

The only help I can give you is that when I had my '66 Rogue (the car in the pic is an American, not a Rogue), it had Hornet AMX aluminum wheels on it and they fit perfectly. So, Hornet wheel spacing should be pretty close. I guess the worst case scenario is that you have to wait until you have the car there, measure it, and then order wheels. BTW, it's super cool that you're buying that car for your dad. I bought my dad a '69 Rebel for his birthday back in 1990.

I can take some measurements if needed, and use a wheel from a 2000 Mustang as a reference point to look at backspacing. Those wheels in the picture appear to be late model style offset, so not sure how much suspension modification he did to it. I don't own the car anymore, but can get access to it for measurements if you need.

Just need to know if I can use these wheels front and back www.summitracing.com/int/parts/are-vn2157765/overview/These are 17x7 with 4" backspacing If not what size will fit front and back, I want to run as wide as a tire I can in the back. I planned on running if possible 205/50 R17 - in front 235/50 R17 - in the back Just if you have time to measure it would be greatly appreciated. Reason for me trying to do this before I ship the car to Iceland is its so much cheaper to put them on car and then ship the car with the new wheels and tires that shipping the wheels and tires separately

Hey Lennie, I'm getting ready to order my wheels/tires too, for my '67 Rogue (I'm going 17x7's too). The back will be fine with the 4' back-space... actually I'm going with a 4.5" for my rears. The front has me a little stumped though. I took an old set of 15" wheels with a 4.5" back-space, and I had to put in a .5" space just to stop it from clamping down on the trunnion when I tightened the lug-nuts. So, unless someone jumps in and tells me I've miss-measured, I'm thinking about a 3.5" backspace on the front of mine.

215/50 R17 - in front 235/50 R17 - in the back
I'm planning on going with Diamond-Back (redlines) on the polished torque-trust II's.

Cool, But do they make those wheels with 3.5 backspacing for the front ?
Also have you measured the stock wheel wells do those tires fit front and back with 4.5" backspacing in the back and 3.5" backspacing for the front

VN405776537 (3.8" back-space)... close enough!
And yes, the 4.5's fit in the back. the wheels that are currently on the car are 15x7's with a 4.5" back-space... totally stock wheel well, and clear the spring by 1.25". These same wheels will NOT fit on the front however because they hit the trunnions.

Nice. So I should maybe go with 4.5" backspacing in the back instead of 4" backspacing. Are you running the stock rear axle or have you upgraded ?

I'm running an 8.8" Ford, with a "short" axle on both sides... it's within .25" of the stock AMC width.

Okay, I´ve been taking a look the wheel options for the wheels I want to use And as soon as you want something different than 4" backspacing the price increases around $150-200 per wheel I think I will order wheels with 4" backspacing and then use a spacer in the front if necessary and then I´ll just machine the rear wheels if possible or try to make the 4" backspacing work in the rear
67roguexcode Do you think that a 4" backspacing with 235/50 wheel will fit the rear ? or do you think that some modifications are needed ?

You will be fine on the inside (leaf-spring side)... the wheel will be .5" out further, but with only 7" wide rims you should still clear the fender lip by about a half inch.
