Well. Got the car home after a 70 mile run and it was running like shit. Decided to check the fuel filter....clean as a new one. Didnt change a thing. Pulled the plugs which were gapped at 32-4”. Bought new plugs and set the gap at 33. No change. Pulled them out and set the gap at 40. No change. It gets above 4200 and it sounds likr the rev limiter is engaging. Hell I dont know what the hell to check next.

Check the voltage source on ignition. If electronic you need a full 12 v...If points should be 6v at hot side. Sounds like ignition. Distributer gears usually dont give notice. Worth a look , but t the engine usually just stops and wont restart. If you have a old original points ignition i would suspect it. Points with incorrect gap can do odd things sorta like you describe.

Check fuel pressure I've had it twice on my AMX where the fuel pump would pump fuel but not keep up past 3000 rpm

The car has an electric fuel pump and a Duraspark distributor. I drove it today and ran fin until you got it to 3000 rpm. I’m going to pull the cap and rotor tomorrow just for grins.

He forgot to mention the MSD 6AL box as well. It's not easy to get to, so I'm sure nobody is messing with him by putting in a 3000 RPM pill...

I had similar trouble with an msd. It was getting 12v but a poor connection was not flowing enough current. It worked but really crapped out as it gained rpm. I thought it was fuel supply related but ruled that out with a gauge and bucket test.
