Have you guys tried this hall effect setup from American Autowire? I have a very old Petronics igniter in the AMX that's starting to wig out and thought this might be better than the warped split magnet ring I have now that cannot be setup to spec at .060" gap no matter what... www.summitracing.com/parts/aww-38131

No but I bet that our buddy Jim C. who is the CEO at American Auto wire could tell you all about them. I will shoot him a email. I here you on the warped ring. At best you get something between a zero and .060" gap.

This thing started giving me trouble at GAD, it will sometimes shudder and backfire through the exhaust for awhile then clear up and run fine. I bypassed the resistor wire with a lead from the starter solenoid to the coil and it felt much stronger, but then the factory tach won't work. I'm willing to try another pickup style at this point, and this one looked good. I forgot about Jim, that would be great if you would ask him about it!

Jim Cardona 8:59 AM (8 minutes ago) to me Hey Rick,
Here’s what I know. I used the kit in my blue 74 401. It was a simple installation and proved very reliable. It was one of the things I never had to worry about on that car. No more setting points! I’ve never used one of the Pertronics kits but heard stories of unreliability about them. I never had any proof on what was wrong with them or how long they lasted.

Huh, good to hear he has actually used the kit with good results! It seems to get great reviews, guess I'll order one.

Long before the interweb, I got and installed a UniLite (infrared) Conversion in my AMC Delco Distributor. Even got a 2nd Module as a spare for just-in-case. That was about 1988 and 45,000 miles, & 300+ passes ago... Someone else owns the car now, but that 1988 installed UniLite is still in there and working... In my hillbilly mind I thought infrared would be less persnickity that magnets, HAL Effect... Have any of you all used the UniLite infrared Conversion ? Is there a reason you all don't like the UniLite?

I have a Unilite in my Rebel, and bought my first one back in the mid-90s. Seem to work pretty well, but the shutterwheel is kinda fragile IMO. If it were my car, I would be looking for a factory Duraspark distributor.

How old is your Petronix Joe?

The Petronics in my bucket is pretty old. I know the previous 2 owners and to my knowledge neither one put it in, so I'd guess it's been installed for over 20 years. I had a Unilite in my old Javelin and fried the optic pickup after leaving the ignition on with a battery charger at the track. Pretty common story for them. I do have a spare Duraspark distributor, but for the pure stock drags that won't fly. I'll stick with a sturdy old hall effect conversion for the stock looks and durability. My new setup should be here today, I'll post results whenever I get around to installing it.

First unilite lasted a few months, left me stranded on hiway 67 south, about 5 miles from home. 10 mile walk home for the old points and a screwdriver. Took it back to supershops for a warranty new unilite and back on the road..

Second one lasted a few months, left me stranded on hiway 287 about five miles from home, another ten mile walk cuz I was too stupid to put the points and screwdriver in the car. I tossed the unilite onto the hiway and waited till it was smashed...
