Ok, someone has to have already done this, compare side by side an AMC V8 Delco Distributor Drive Gear to a Small Block Chevy Delco Points Distributor Drive Gear... A friend recently handed me a sad looking 1973 Chevy Points Distributor and the Gear sure looks the same as an AMC, but I no longer have any of my stash of stock AMC pieces and parts to compare to... So what's the difference between the 2 Drive Gears?

Buick V-8 would be a whole lot closer, as it has the same style of timing cover/oil pump setup, and I'm pretty sure that it won't work either.

I hear y'all. But dang in pictures they sure look close... I got a SBC piece in-hand, but I ain't got no AMC piece... Was wonderin' if the hardness was the difference since SBC cam gear is part of the camshaft and probably hardened...

Going by that picture, the ID of the AMC "looks" a lot smaller. I have both units here, and several of them. Problem is, 2 days worth a digging to get to them to compare.

If i could i would post a pic. The chevy gear is like twice the size of the amc irregardless that they look similar.

OK, I lied. My AMC parts box was closer than I thought. Didn't have to push a Car out of the way. Anyways. I used a Cheap junk plastic caliper to measure them. The numbers are more representative than fact. I used the MM side since it was better/closer to get the numbers from.
SBC Gear Diameter 41mm...........AMC 35 1/2mm SBC Snout Diameter 31mm..........AMC 28mm Length of the whole assembly 56mm............52mm
I didn't measure oil pump drive pin depth, thickness or ID of the gear. I'm not getting that gAyMC cause as spud said, not even close, to the eye a blind man can see they're not even close. I pulled out the AMC Dizzy, then unwrapped my GM, and before it was even side by side with the AMC to compare I could see the dif. The GM gear is huge in comparison.

One more difference should be mentioned as well.
The GM gear is a Distributer Gear, while the AMC gear is a "Dizzy" Gear.
Probably the biggest difference of all! lol

Appears Shaft diameters may be the same .490"/.491", but as per usual... overall it ain't as big as I thought it was... and giving it a pet name doesn't make it any bigger does it ? ha!

My theory is just put a chevy in it. Its a great upgrade. If you want power go for at least 400 inches. A 350/350 with 400 torque is easy. Youcan get the new eddy injection for less than half the price of the eddy amc injection. You can buy the entire 460 hp eddy top end kit for the less than a pair of aluminum amc heads. And if you really wanna whip the distributer gear problem put a 500$ craigslist LS engine in it. I know shut up spud your being a prick😂

As beefy as that Chevy gear is, and makes the AMC gear look frail, it's no surprise the AMC gears chew up so much/fast.
