Ever wonder? From left to right: 1: 1971 and up 2: 1970 and late 1969 except SC/rambler which is the same but with the flat Shifter handle close to the 1971. 3: Competition Plus replacement shifter for the early factory style similar to a ford shifter. 4: Up to early 1969 factory shifter. I have never seen Big Bad 69 car with one of these in it so, I assume that the change time period could be figured out somehow relative to when the Big bad colors. IMG_1707 by Rick Jones, on Flickr

The 71-up handle looks very similar but has course threads for the knob and the S/C Rambler has fine threads for the knob.
69-70 handles (including Machine) have fine threads for the knob and 71 SC/360 has course threads.

I sold my round handle shifter with my 70 amx and that was a bad mistake. I have a 71 up assy and early autolite assy. I have a hurst vertigate assy, but its missing the reverse knob. Man i miss that round handle shifter. Its the best. I have the early flat handle that was bent over toward the driver, but it has been heated and straightened out. I will trade this vertigate for a round handle shifter, and amc vertigates are hard to find. Maybe i can get a picture of my junk collection.

I so wish I had somethin' with a 4 or 5 speed. Automatics suck all the fun out of driving old junk.

Yeahbut, I drive on the street all the time, and on the strip only once in a while these days. I DGAF if it's actually fast for the most part, just whether or not it's fun to drive. Autos just aren't fun to drive.
The wife and I were in Europe this spring, and the guy at the car rental desk in Paris looked at me funny when I told him I would rather have a car with a manual trans. "Amereecanz alwayeez want automatiques.."

Ok so you gotta get over the want it but not enough to do it part and get to the lifes too short for an otto trans frame of mind. That amc turbo 400 already converted to rwd has gotta be worth enough for a start fund. I like a stick too. Just not so much when i got a nice greasy double with cheese in one hand.

Yeah that rebel would be slammin with a nice stick to slap around. And if you really want to kill some bitchmobiles, get the chevy version richmond and forget about the tall rear gears. Go for the 3.27 low and you will kick sand in their faces for a change. Ised 3.27 low gm richmonds are available, get the quicktime amc to gm bellhousing. Turbo 400 yoke you have, the clutch linkage is not hard. The richmond is the shit to git. It fits like a glove. And you can crossbreed them with different input, clutch pilots, gear ratios. Easy as your horny aunt to work on too.

I don't know dick about the transmission you referred to. Need something to type into my searcher. Last manual trans hotrod I had was the '66 Rogue with a T-5, and that was many, many moons ago.

I have a Doug Nash (Richmond) 5 speed in my 68 AMX and I will be installing one in my Machine. I like them. They sorta feel like a T10 but you can't shift them quite as fast unless you drive it like you stole it.
