I had a quote to sand down and epoxy paint my floor in the back room. He cam back with a quote of $1,888.00 to do a area of 675 sq ft. I thought that was too much so I told him to sharpen his pencil and price it out if i paid in cash. He finally figured out what I was asking him to do. I use sayings like that all the time and my girlfriend thinks I am nuts. I tell her that being nuts has nothing to do with it and then proceed to recite sayings that my Dad and Grandpa would say. She says that my whole family is weird. I say to her again...

I like old nautical sayings like “ pay the devil” and “ at a loose end” or “ between the devil and the deep blue sea” “ in the doldrums” or “ chock a block”. Or “ drop a yardarm on em” and “ three sheets to the wind”...There are a million of em and nobody has a clue of their nautical origins. The engish language is rife with nautical influence. I had a boss who was sure i was in the navy. I told him nope. I just watch a lot of popeye. The term” pay the devil” is decribing a difficult dangerous act... wherein the “devil” was a part of a wooden ship, above the waterline, where the deck meets the gunwales approximately midship. This area was prone to flex and leak and was covered “ paid” with pitch. It was done by hanging off the side when the ship was leaning and the devil was higher up from the waterlline...With a brush in one hand and a bucket of hot tar in the other while the ship rolled and pitched in the sea. A job frought with danger and difficulty.. “ “ three sheets two the wind” desribes a ship at full sail, wherein speed overrides control and anything can happen. Hence its usage decribing a sailor at maximum alcoholic influence before the “ wreck”.

Knows the ropes - Was actually a term used in sailing I will keep you posted - Started when they would actually nail up a note on a pole. There are lots more. Not sure if this was a Jerry C. Jones original but it stuck with me. " She is so ugly that she would draw gum balls on a Monkey's ass." He would shorten it to just "She would draw gum balls" when he wanted to be nice. LOL!

Let the cat out of the bag, hard and fast, hand over fist, ship shape, full to the gunwales,Stem to stern, caught in the rigging, over the top. I could go till i keel over. Weather eye.... one used by amc.

I had sent the fellow a text about sharpening the pencil and noted that the area is 14.5 x 45 which works out to 653 sq ft not, 675 that they measured. He came back with a quote of $1,588.00. Still a lot of money for me when I could rent a sander for $188.00.

I went to the Post Office today to ask about a lost package. After the lovely lady did some checking she told me that it was in one of two hubs. Then she said that she "would keep me posted"... I said "keep me posted.. where is the post?" and looked around the room. She said right here at the counter and laughed.

So to keep him honest, I Jewed him down a little. I came back with a offer of $1500.00 even and I buy the beer. He replied "Sounds Good!" (Even though we didn't speak) So now we are talking cash on the barrel head. (I guess, I need to find a barrel head so that I can lay the cash on it)

No. I am sure "Hell will freeze over" before she calls me. At least I know that she can "haul the mail." Good thing she is not a Witch that moonlights as a Well Digger. When hell freezes over, it would be "colder than a well digger's ass in the Yukon and a Witches tit in a brass bra".
