A couple of my buds that could be my mighty Matador back in high school; Jeremy, whose dad helped him put together a '69 Nova. 350/350 4bbl, dual exhaust, headers, shift kit, 3.xx gears. Probably a solid mid-14 sec. car. He'd usually get me by a solid half sec. according to the guys waiting at the far end of our 1/4 mile street raceway. My other friend that could beat me, Jon, had a '73 Mustang, 351C, 2bbl, headers, three speed, 2.8x gears. He put the car together himself, but his dad paid for the $1600 (1988 dollars) motor. He was actually a touch quicker than my bud with the Nova. That 351C rocked, despite being choked with a crappy Motorcrap 2bbl and high gears. Some of my buds that I could beat: Ranchero Dave, 1970 Ranchero, 302, 4bbl, duals, three speed, 3.xx gears. Carl, 1978 Camaro, 350, 4bbl, four speed, 4.11 gears. Always got me on the holeshot, I could always run him down by the end. Some old drunk: 1968 El Camino, 327, auto, unkown gears. Smoked him half a dozen times. Earl, 1970 Mustang, 351W, 4bbl, auto, unknown gears. Paul, 1964 Fairlane, 289, 4bbl, duals, 3.7ish gears.
My car was a totally bare bones '73 Matador, stock 360, 727, 3.something gears, 2bbl, dual exhast. I flogged that car mercilessly, and it never stranded me.

My bud's 76 Gremlin went a best of 15.5 with a 77 360, 2bbl, hedman headers, 2 1/4" duals, 904, 2.73 AMC 15.
Eddy Performer and Holley 600 1850 got him solid 14.8s. He saw a best of 14.7, maybe .6. Or "The Monster 304" is the one that got the 14.6, or both.

After high school, I put a Torker and a Holley 650 on the 360 in the Matador, and it picked up pretty noticebly. In 1990, I added a Comp 268H, a new timing set, had the heads done, got a 904, and put the motor into a '71 Javelin with 3.54 gears, all new 2-1/4" exhaust. It was a night and day difference for sure. Never did take it to a track, but on the street I could hold my own pretty well. But OTOH, with me driving the Jav, and my dad driving my '69 Coronet, the Coronet would absolutely smoke the Jav. Hands down. Off the line, and by 10 or 12 car lengths at the end. I will forever kick myself for selling that car.

Its all edrie marqez's fault. He sez in his book the 327 rebel will do mid 14s when modded with headers and duals (and who knows what else) so now its "fact"... anyone know what a stock 290 borgamatic javelin would do in the quarrter?

Prolly mid 17s. It think that's what chuckles 304 powered Jav did stock w/2bbl and single exhaust. We may never know for sure. People sure seem to have an aversion to time slips. I also had a 69 Jav, 290, 2bbl, auto, tall highway gears. It was a turd in the acceleration dept. for sure. But a good lookin' car. Prolly never shoulda sold that one, either.

I cut that long Y-pipe at the front seat and put on two of those very restrictive "cone baffled" glasspacks. Which I figure was no better than single, never felt any dif. But 17.0 and Quaker is slow. Thompson would have netted me 2-3/10s, been there done that with faster cars. Plus that was a 2.7 60' cause I had to baby it out. I will say that 304 is a very torquey mill for it's size. Better than other Brand X engines of it's size. Top end was/is soft tho even with a 4bbl.

I dunno what the cam specs are on a 304, pretty mild I bet. I never get tired of tellin' people about the 304 that I bought for my dad to put in his Rebel back in the early 90s. It was a commercial rebuild that came out of a '70 or '71 Javelin. Had 10K miles on the rebuild, tops. Ran great, had just a tiny lope at idle but the motor didn't shake one bit. Lots of torque and midrange, would do a one wheel peel at will with 2.87 gears. Got 25+ mpg on the freeway, didn't use any oil to speak of between changes. Started right up on the coldest day. Just a nice motor for a daily driver. Couldn't ask for anything more. Got it for like $200 in '90 or '91.

I love the bottom end on my 304. For a street cruiser, it's perfect. It feels like it has more than it does. 2.87 peg leg here with 255/60/15s and long slappers that hit on the spring eye and she'll still spin it from a dead idle with no ghey power braking crap.

That's prolly where all these guys get off sayin' they're trompin' new 'vettes and 'stangs and what have you. At a streetlight for a hundred feet, catchin' the other guy by surprise, it can feel like a W.

Yep, or just playing em. I was at a redlight in my car when a srt Neon pulled up beside me reving and popping his blow off valve. The light turned green, I jumped out real quick then eased out to watch him go. It was on a blind hill and the cops sit on the other side. He got lucky there wasn't one there. I'm sure the story was he cleaned me.

Yaknow it looks kinda like a 327 rebel performs close to a 304 javelin. And likely better than a 290 javelin. I bet if you put headers and duals on the rebelx and the javelin, the rebel would be faster. The 327 ex manifolds look extremely restrictive. I bet if you did the same mods to both cars, the rebel would be faster in the end.

I guess we need to find one for some testing. Didn't Rick just build a 327 for somebody?

My Cuz Rebel327 built one and I helped. Just ask him about me taking a Sawsall to a Torker while he was trying to hold it... I will try to get him to post up some comments. The biggest thing I can see is the heads suck. I have no flow data but I think if you try to put a splitter in between the two center exhaust ports it would actually make it worse. The Torker and my home made headers did make a big difference but we figured out that he had too much duration in the cam so, the horsepower numbers weren't what he was hoping for. He did get a different cam ground but we haven't installed it yet. I will have to see if I can inspire to take it in for a second round. In the mean time, he has Parkman playing around with a set of heads to see what he can do with them. As far as a stock vs stock comparison to a 290 or 304 it would really be interesting.. Like say my old '69 AMX 290 4 spd vs a 66 Rebel 327 4 spd. The Rebel with the 327 would out weigh the AMX for sure. It is debatable which one had more horsepower and torque with out accurate dyno results.

I just find it amazing it's so hard to get real numbers on one of these.
