So now I'm facing a decision. Go buy a new Heli-coil kit for $50, or just swap on another manifold from the pile. Knowing my luck, I'll break off at least one manifold bolt in the hardest to access spot, and be screwing with it all damn day.

Got a Helicoil kit at Crapa for $32, and drill at the industrial supply for $6. Fixed.

Cool deal. and why swap, you got a 401, that'll do all you ever need to do and more....
I only talk LS shit when these clowns talk stupid. stupid is, and stupid responds...
Like the Salt Flat AMX, it's just a Camaro now. Or a Chevy truck with a Turbo.... It's not an AMC plant doing the work.
For the prices people want for 401, LS swap looks mighty good. Once the swap is done, you're on easy cheap for replacement mills. But since you already have a 401 and no doubt got the whole truck for a song, it's perfect as it...

I like the 401 just fine, as I said earlier, the only reason I would go LS would be to get the overdrive trans. I took it to the Home Despot today and picked up lumber and whatnot. It idled in traffic on a hot day without even overheating. I bought it for $500 in 2006, and had to put a transmission in it as the front driveline had broken at the double cardan joint, and it came around and knocked a chunk off the transmission case. They break the U joint there because nobody ever greases them. It's huge PITA.

Sprung for new tires today. I'm committed to driving it now. Replaced the power steering lines yesterday, so now the only leak is the front seal at the damper. I'm sure I have another seal on hand, but I'll have to order a Speed-Sleeve. Oh, an a new exhaust leak sprung up at the passenger manifold. Scarcely odd as it has two bolts missing with a 99% chance of being broken off.

The NOS tires from 1981 were too cheap to turn down, and they look great! I'm sure they'll be fine on the freeway.

Sure enough, the center exhaust bolts are broken off, and sure enough, they are grade 8 (or harder). The only way this is getting fixed is to pull the head, which ain't happening this year.

a little tick never hurt anyone, just keep a window cracked.
I'm glad you're getting to enjoy the old beast, Bud.

The real easy solution was to go ahead and put a stereo in it, so that I can't really hear the tik. I refurbed a really high end (20+ years ago) Pioneer Premier pre-amp only deck, nice high end (20+ years ago) Kenwood amp, and some brand new JBL separates (door speakers) that I got for wholesale cost. I'm holding off on the subs until I get the floor kit in it.

So, after riding on the Strugglebus for a few laps around the mailbox, I got the dash lights, heater controls/blend doors, and all the gauges but the fuel gauge working again. That one is either the sender or the wiring. Or maybe both. Still have no headlights.

I swear, some times messing with old junk feels like buying a ticket for a one way ride on the strugglebus. Since the old Motorcrap carb likes to empty itself after a day or two (non-ethanol gas), I had to crank it for like 30 seconds the other day to get it fired up. I go to Home Despot for a couple of things, and when I go to start it, the damn starter is acting weak. I'm sure I have one laying around that I can throw some brushes in. It's always sumthin'.

I drug the ol' girl out and finished the floor, stereo, courtesy lights, and sorted out the weak starter when hot issue, plus a couple of other wiring hack jobs fixed. Took 'er for a drive down to a BBQ joint in town that the wife and I like and it ran out pretty well. Still need to figger out why I have no headlights, and maybe think about a tune up. The plugs, wires, cap, and rotor were old when I bought this truck 16 years ago and haven't gotten any younger. The carb has never been apart near as I can tell, so it's actually pretty impressive that it runs at all, let alone mostly pretty good.
Pics tomorrow.
