Well, I tried wiring in the HEI module, and it wouldn't run. Checked and rechecked the wiring, no joy. Evidently, I'm incompetent with simple electricals.
In a fit of irritation, I dug out a Delco points distributor, tore it apart, cleaned, and re-greased everything. Cleaned up the points, eyeballed the gap, swapped distributor gears, slapped it in. Dug out an ancient looking Delco coil and slapped it in. Found the timing, and VROOM. Fired right up. Ear timed it, checked dwell, dead nuts 33 degrees. Twiddled the idle a little more. Runs fairly good.

On the recommendation of n2oJoe, I lowered the carb float level a little. It seemed to help with idle quality, though it's still no quite put a glass of water on the air cleaner with nary a ripple smooth, it's better. Hopefully it cures the random flood and die while idling in traffic problem. Now I'm off to the redneck truck show.

I finally got around to dropping the gas tank and welding up the hole in it. I had tried some of the fuel resistant epoxy, and it worked OK, but was a temporary solution. While I was at it, I figgered out why the fuel gauge wasn't working. Turns out there was a hole in the float. I tested the sender with a meter, and it was working just fine. I'm aware that replacement floats are available, but I really didn't want to wait a week for one. After dicking around with cutting open the float, putting a champagne cork in it, and soldering it up only to discover that it wasn't buoyant enough, I was racking my brain for a new solution that didn't involve an overnight shipping charge. Walking through the kitchen, I spotted an empty aspirin bottle sitting on the counter. It looked to be about the right size. Hmmm.... Fits and works perfect. While I had it apart, I changed out all of the filler and vent hoses. That was a challenge in itself, as they like to collapse upon themselves when bent, which led to a bit of frustration, until I got the bright idea to stuff a piece of PEX pipe in them. Problem solved. I guess we'll find out the long term gasoline resistance of PEX pipe and aspirin bottles.

Now if it quits working just pull it out again and unscrew the cap to drain it.

So far my hokey float is holding up well, but my sender goes to zero when it gets below half a tank. Grrr... Oh well, I'll deal with that later. My vent hose suckered me in, then collapsed after all, so after all that screwing around I did what I should have done in the first place and bought new molded fill and vent hoses from BJ's. They couldn't have fit any more perfectly.

I'm really having a great time with my AMC junk lately. Took the truck over to the Columbia river beach on the Oregon side today. Learned that it's not quite 100% ready for heavy off roading, but good enough for putting around on the beach and the back trails.

It has a just right stance, just enough lift that the 33s look perfect, and those '80s Centerlines (Ultra, but whatever) go perfect with the body lines. I think it needs a new fan clutch, as it kinda wants to heat up when chugging at low speed through loose sand, or idling the back trails. Get out where you can go 10-15mph and it cools back down. AFAIK, original radiator, fan clutch, water pump. It also sounds like the fan is hitting the shroud when under heavy load, so it might have a broken motor mount, but I thought those were captured. I'll investigate it eventually.
I bought it in 2006 for $500.
