Hello all, thanks for letting me be a part of the group. Hoping to learn allot and have fun. I've recently purchased a 74 CJ5 thats running a 343 with dogleg heads, I've added an Edelbrock airgap intake thats topped with a holley 650. The guy claimed the engine was rebuilt, not sure about that, it burns ALLOT of oil so I wanna do a rebuild and would like some assistance from you guys who know about AMCs. Its been suggested to use edelbrock heads, roller rockers, roller lifters and 360 crank. Im not opposed to any of it, i'd just like a great running motor. I'd even consider sending out to someone. Thoughts, suggestion??

If it runs well and doesn't clatter, I would suggest trying to figure out where the oil is going before tearing it down for a rebuild. I.e., leakage, or through the PCV or somesuch.

How would i narrow this down? I've checked pcv and its not getting in there, I do notice smoke coming out of oil fill tube with breather removed, kinda leads me to rings.

Smoke coming out of the breather tube usually indicates blow-by so,you may have a piston or ring issue. I am also wondering what kind of head work was done. If the valve guides are shot and or the valve seals are junk, this could cause oil consumption and smoke as well.

I would try a Leak Down test to find out the percentage of each individual cylinder. And of course the above mentioned valve guide seals must be checked.Good luck.

Tino, the air gap intake is notorious for allowing oil to splash all over the pcv valve and cause smoking and oil consumption. It needs carefull attention to keeping oil away from the valve by using the stock metal sheild intake gasket. I also make a larger oil baffle/ cover to cover the pcv “ pocket” and fill that pocket with some material from a diesel engine breather, that stuff that looks like like metal “wool” or a metal potscrubber. I work in a truck shop and get that material from diesel engine breathers. I would also caution you about parts that would change your engine into an engine that makes its power at high rpms. In my opinion you dont want a race engine in a jeep, unless you want to race it. And a jeep chassis is for low to moderate speed off of the road. So i dont know about the edelbrock heads, which are only good for a hi lift cam and hi rpms. Really the heads you have have more capacity than you really need anyway.
