A fellow stopped by last week and offered to paint my 16x24 barn out back for $2,300.00. As soon as I seemed interested he sharpened the pencil to $1,900.00.
He had a twang and eventually told me that he was from South Carolina and his crew comes to Michigan every year to paint barns etc.. Seems odd but whatever.
I thought about it over the week end and decided to tell him that I would go for it for $1,500.00 cash. He told me that he bought the paint from Sherwin Williams so actually went to the Sherwin Williams store and picked out a color. I called him on Monday and settled on $1,700.00 and sent him a text with my address and the color code. So the painter shows up the next day with a barn broom to brush the siding off. I told him that his boss told me that they would power wash it and wire brush it down before painting. Of course that was not communicated. Then the boss shows up, the guy who came out the first time, and argues with me about what was discussed. He finally agrees to wire brush the barn down then drives off. So I am talking with the guy who is actually doing the work and I see the 5 gallon bucket of paint on his tail gate. I look at the label and it is whatever red from who knows where. I told him that it is the wrong color. Again, well you have to call the boss about that but he will be back in a hour. I waited to talk to him face to face because by now I am not trusting him and I know that this will be a hassle. This time he brings his father-in-law who is 60 and they both try to convince me that it is the same color. I have my paint chip in hand and after a few words I win the argument. So off the boss goes again to buy the paint. While he is gone the old guy just jacks his jaw and does nothing or sits in his truck and watches the guy work. He was trying to win me back over so I played his game.
Finally the point... He looks over at the car that I have sitting outside and axes me "what model is that old car over there?". I said it is a Rambler American. He said no, what model? I said the make is a Rambler and the model is a American. Then he says " I mean what year is it?". I told him that it is a 1967. This happens time and time again with people from the south and I don't know why that is. It makes as much sense as cutting the light off.
So the boss gets back with the correct paint and proceeds to argue with me again about where he said he was getting the paint from. Obviously he really wanted to put cheapass paint on vs something that actually costs money. In the end the barn got painted and looks a lot better now. When they were done, I walked past the two talkers and thanked the painter and shook his hand.
