Hello Everyone, My name is Ryan. I am new to this site. Currently I own a 1977 Cj7 with a AMC 390 and th400 trans. 390 has Edelbrock intake, holley sniper efi, and holley hyper spark coil.
I have been researching th400 transmission torque converters and flywheels. Having issues with flywheel rubbing the transmission housing. Is it normal for the torque converter to wobble when disconnected from flywheel? When I say disconnected the transmission is on a transmission jack. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have photos just don’t know how to add them.

Welcome! Normally, you shouldn't just bolt up a TH400 flex plate to a flat 390 crankshaft without the use of a a crank adapter kit. Plus, there is no counter bore in the 390 crankshaft for the torque converter hub to pilot in to. So before we all make the wrong guess on what is going on with your set up please post up some pictures when you can. Meanwhile, there is a whole bunch of info in this thread. rebsamcandjeep.proboards.com/thread/585/amc-290-401-flywheels-flexplates

If the converter is wobbly you may have trashed the front pump from no converter/crank alignment.

A turbo 400 convertor will not fit a 390 crank without some kind af adaptation. A turbo 400 convertor will fit a 72 or later 401 crank but needs to have an adapter bushing or the gm sized convertor hub pilot will be loose in the torqueflite sized crank pilot hole…Either an early flat flange 390 ( or 1971 only 401 flat flange) crank needs complicated and obvious adaptation to fit a turb 400, or a 71 and up torqueflite flanged 401 crank needs a critical ( yet nearly invisible) adapter sleeve bushing pressed into the pilot hole in the crank flange, to make up the difference in the larger torqueflite pilot hole to the smaller gm size convertor pilot. I suggest removing the trans to inspect what your really working with.
