I’m guessing the overdrive is not a great asset with that ratio. Oh well. When you get the 2.87’s out make sure you pack them away. Those good amc 20 street gear ratios are not made anymore.

I hardly ever throw anything away.

Its a common trait for old car folk. Just dont let it rust. That screws me a lot.

In the Midwest, jeeps almost disintegrate as quick as IH

Gotta keep 'em out of the weather and stay off the salty roads.

I'll drive something replaceable in conditions that destroy cars.

Welp, the Roadkill Rebel made it to cruise night over in Longview and back again. I even took my machinist and one of his buddies for a lap up and down the street. Nothing broke, it didn't overheat, and held good oil pressure the whole time. The 2.87s and Loc-Rite are not a great combo. The car got lots of looks and positive comments at the cruise, and at the DQ where I stopped for my small choco dipped cone on the way home. Next week, it's getting shipped to Kansas. Not Texas.

Sounds like she did what she was supposed to do. Make some fun. What are your rpm’s at 60 with the 2.87’s?

Dunno. Still haven't hooked up the tach. It will pretty much hold 60mph in fifth at a high idle.

Thats not bad really. If it’ll carry it on flat ground at a low rpm . Should get mileage. I think 3.15’s are about all my 4.0 will lug in OD. 3.31’s might be better. I could still drop down a tire size. Its roadkill and it’ll get better. Congrats on your success!

I have a set of 3.15s, and a set of 3.54s that I got from Rick. I'm almost tempted to go even steeper. I find myself wishing that I had another couple of "big car" rear end housings. According to the handy speed calculator, with a 28 inch tire (235-70/15) and 3.91 gears, it would cruise at just shy of 82mph @ 2600 rpm. 4.10s would drop it to 77mph @ 2600.
This 360 has no shortage of torque down low, and a nice broad torque band. The Edelcock cam seems to function as designed. The tires I have on it are very old and shitty, so I haven't taken it on the freeway at all. I probably won't spring for new tires until we get settled in the new digs.

I think 2200 rpm is a really good rpm for economical cruising with a v8. 2600 is much sportier, yet liveable. 3000 is too much for me personally, but its ok for a little while. My s-10 with 4.3 cruises at 2000 rpm at 62-64 mph. Its got od and lockup and the cruise rpm is really good. Think the gear is 3.42. Tire is 27”

3.54 gives me 80mph @ 2300rpm. Not bad, certainly worth trying out. What with the shitty drum brakes and decided lack of safety equipment, I definitely want some fresh, quality tires under it before I go truckin' down the freeway at 80+.
