I was thinking for some time now that it would be nice to have a truck capable of pulling a fairly heavy trailer around. Unfortunately, all of my Jeep trucks are 1/2 ton, skimpy for trailer pulling to be sure. Out here, 3/4 ton FSJs in good repair are scarce, 1-ton FSJs are like hen's teeth in any condition. Since I was gonna buy a heavier truck, I may as well have one with a dump bed. I've always got something to haul. All of the Mopars I could find were affordable, but had bullshit 318, or expensive as hell and having a diesel. So, it was gonna have to be either a Chevy or a Ford. It ended up being a Chevy. A 1991 3500HD, which is an extra heavy duty 1-ton, or more like a 1-1/2 ton truck. Akin perhaps to a Ford F-450 or maybe a F-550. This one has an auto, which kinda sux, but on the plus side, it has a 454, a three yard box with two-way gate (hinge at the top and the bottom of the gate), engine-driven hydraulic pump, and external hydraulics. It uses 19.5" delivery truck wheels and tires. It needed a little tinkering and some deferred maintenance taken care of. I have about 90% of that done. Here it is with 7000lbs. of rock onboard. It tips that rock out of there like it was nothing.

Yes. Loud as hell. Mebbee this summer I'm thinking of having new exhaust put on it. I don't mind the noise so much, I like to hear my motor, but I've never been a fan of stacks on anything smaller than 80K GVWR.

I finally have it mostly de-bugged. Took it on a trip to retrieve some junk out in the gorge. It ran and drove great the entire time, and got 10mpg over the whole trip. Not bad for a quarter century old beast that weighs 8400lbs empty.
