I just finished up the 360, got it tuned etc. Took it for a spin yesterday seems like all is well timing wise, still have some idle issues in gear.
1. On cold start no ticking 2. Engine comes up to temp ticking is heard the loudest 3. Oil pressure at idle at 180 Degrees 35PSI, cold 65psi 4. Noise sounds like it coming from the front of engine around the fan / water pump / timing chain cover area 5. Disconnected alt and PS pump ticking still there at temp 6. Did the stick in the ear to engine components trick, engine sounds good paid close attention to valve train seems good there 7. Ticking does increase on acceleration 8. Don't know if it matters, but running an Elgin E-910-P .477 V lift 293 Adv Duration with rollers, 600CFM Holley, 9.2 Comp Pistons 9. Used stock cam and distributor gears both looked good 34K miles 10. Did Ricks oiling mods on cam gear as he showed me in my garage a few years ago
I'm not sure why there is no tick when cold, seams or sounds like an exhaust tick, but have new gaskets etc., and the tick is in the front. I broke the cam in and during this process there was no ticking noise, or if there was it was minimal. Plans were to get it going listen to engine and then put the headers on.
This is my 5th engine built and third AMC, never had this issue before. If you have experienced this before, please share the cure.

Exhaust leaks do sound like the engine is ticking some times. Well,, most of the time. Noises are tough because it sounds like it is coming from one place when actually it is coming from another. If it is not too much trouble check the torque converter bolt heads to make sure that they haven't been hitting. Sometimes the splash pan tabs at the transmission can hit too.

I'll check it out among various other things. Got it tuned up really good Saturday and she runs real strong. Ticking does seem to be more at an idle vs cruising down the road.
