Sounds more likely that the shop cut major corners on the rebuild and don't want to stand behind their work.

For my use, the cheap ass boneyard 5 speed swap is the best thing I've done. With 3.54's, it's only turning about 2,200 at 70. For a non computer automatic option, there's always the 700r4

I have a tkx on order, but wasn’t planning on using it in this car. It was actually cheaper than a gear vendors. I want to pit it in my other 401 powered 69 javelin in place of the 4 speed. I been watching the hoarders show. Realizing i’m a hoarder. I got four javelins and not enough time or energy for 1. I’m just gonna put the 2.87 rear back in and go with that. I’m feelin cheap and lazy. Its not a bunch of work. What i really need is a rack to store those damn extra axle assemblies on. Really waiting to see how rick’s torqueflite o.d. project works out also.

Lol i told u ima whoreder! Yeah i have several parts on order from summit that havent ever showed up. The supply lines have dried up. Edelbrock is sold out and this tremec order is three months old now. I got an ignition on order from FAST since the first of the year . Summit doesnt seem very interested in delivering anymore. I order stuff and a lot of the time it just gets forgotten about. Never did get any cometic headgaskets, crane amc hydraulic roller cams are history… its truly the end.

Welp heres how not to do it. I picked a 2.87 differential from the hoard, cleaned it up and painted it, took off the cover and checked it out, seemed ok, installed it, filled it up with valvoline synthetic 75-140. Which was a mistake, i shoulda known better than use that thin synthetic shit in an old rear. It was fairly noisey. Not exactly a howl but more than a singing ring and pinion. Dang luck of the draw. I’m thinkin it was the one i had in it before, and maybe it was, but that 3.15 spoiled me with its quietness. And the synthetic oil didnt help. So i dumped out the new synthetic, bought some conventional 85-140 and a quart of lucas heavy duty oil conditioner for conventional oil. It says you can use it up to 50 percent. The axle holds 2.5 quarts so i used 1.5 quarts of oil and 1 quart lucas. The lucas hd oil conditioner is like really thick oil. So with all that goop in there its not near as noisey. Not quiet either. I guess this is the last roundup for the 2.87 ring and pinion rear. I think i got another one somewhere… maybe it better maybe not…So the never ending saga continues…i would much rather have an overdrive, but this might work for awhile. Its more noisey cold. After it warms up its a little quieter. Still not what i wanna hear on those four hour trips to east texas. Guess i can spin the wheel of fortune on that other rear on labor day weekend. This ones gonna make the 400 mile round trip to east texas this weekend.

Holy shit the rpm air gap i ordered months ago showed up. Guess i can put in on my junk 401 and try ot out. I tried out my 2.87 axle last weekend. It didnt exactly work out like i hoped…i suppose due to the fact i was able to go faster at the same rpms, i actually got worse gas milage. I just drove it a lot harder. I averaged about 13 mpg. But i did cut alot of time off the trip. I cant do anything right.

Look at it this way spud, you're buying time.

I did enjoy the ability to keep my road speed closer to what everyone else was driving at a little lower rpm. Which equates to driving faster, which honestly required more throttle and fuel. It highlights the reality there is no magical solution for hi speed fuel consumption. If i averaged the same road speed as before the gear change, i think it might have helped, might not. At this point i kind of doubt even overdrive would improve milage much. I think the big picture is trying to drive at 70 mph or more is just gonna take a lot more fuel. The mind game is the 3.15’s Gave the engine advantage against the wind and hills and whatnot, gave the speedometer an erroneous high reading, a higher tach reading, all of which tricked me into driving slower and ultimately saving fuel.

Going from 50 to 70 almost doubles the drag on the vehicle.

Well i think i may be gambling on the 2.87 rear now. It has slowly gotten more noisey. It has to make another 210 mile trip back to the spud cave in south dallas in a couple days. I dont believe it provided a mileage improvement over the 3.15s, i believe it gets worse mileage. Maybe its the worn ring and pinion, or the rpm range, or the fact i’m spending a good amount of distance in hills, or a combination of those or other factors,? i dunno. But,The noise has become tiresome annoying and a worry. Time to swap it out again. The eternal quest for a more perfect javelin goes on!!!🤣😆😄 still procrastinating on overdrive options. So as a note, best milage with this axle- 15 mpg. Worst? 12… but that included some 100 mph miles so not such a good example. The car is wonderfull at 100 mph 😁

Ok so its been awhile, i havent done anything interesting to the E- javelin lately. Other than drive it. Still floggig the noisey 2.87 rear. Same old same old just put another 1500 miles on it . Still working . Might be going back to the 3.15 again this spring for a new racing season…So its christmas and i decided to rid myself of some money. I bought the dreaded melling MTA-1 performance amc cam. Also known as edelbrock performer and many other names. This is the 204/214 @ .450/.475 lift miracle that everyone sells. I bought the cam/ lifter/ lube kit local for 194$. I think i will sling it off into the E- jav’s 304. Yeah i know this engine is less stock all the time. But then again who gives a shit. I wanna go faster. I can save the stock cam for a detune if the MTA-1 ruins my mileage. Which 16-17 mpg ait exactly mileage anyways. I wonder how much faster it will go? Or maybe how much slower it will go? I have a lotta faith in this cam. It should do fun stuff. And a 304 can use an upgrade in fun. And really now i’m tired of getting beat by kia’s. At this point i can say the 3.15 gear is a strong performance upgrade on this tune, i cannot see a milage improvement with the 2.87. But i think i will leave the 2.87 in, just to see how the cam works with it, which i fully expect the 2.87 and mta-1 cam to be a dog. I know the 3.15 will be a much better combo. Anyways its just for fun and experimentation.

Kinda strange to read that a 3.15 is a performance gear. LOL! It is all relative. I love that little Melling cam in the 304. My Daughter's Javelin runs really well with that cam so I can't keep my foot out of it to really see what kind of gas milage I can really get out of it. Which carb and intake do you have again?

I have a edelbrock performer intake and a edelbrock avs-2 650 performer carb. I also have a half inch four hole phenolic spacer from a 1970 390. I’m very happy with this carb and intake. I know you have a holley street dominator, which is an uncommon part, but i wish i had one to try. The 3.15 IS a performance gear for sure. In my opinion, Amc did not overdo or underdo the optional 3.15 ratio. Keepin in mind it was a performance option for a stock amc engine, it offers a .28 improvement over a 2.87. The 3.31 ratio is just .16 better than a 3.15. You gotta keep in mind these cars were made for normal driving with short 23-24 inch tires. The ratio that shocks me is the 3.91. Now thats a deeep ratio for short tires. I know a guy here that has a 68 javelin that came with a dealer installed 4.44 and what a ridiculous car it is. My experience with amc engines has been LESS gear is better. You really dont need to zing them. You can, but i always seemed happier with the lesser ratio than what i thought i “ needed” . But anyways like you said “ its all relative” and you couldnt be more right. What it is relative to is the cam! Or in other words, what I refer to a lot as “ the tune” or the “ performance level” or more specically the effective torque rpm range. Whats gonna happen is when i put the hotter mta-1 cam in is the 2.87 is gonna be just a little softer in high gear. Its gonna make the 3.15s less of a “performance option” and more of a “ performance nessesity”. And at that point we can assume the 3.31 is gonna be my new “ performance option” ratio. Get it? Even though the mta-1 cam is small, its still gonna want a higher rpm window to work in. The small cid and generous 3.44 stroke will conspire with the bigger cam to soften the killer off idle torque of the stock cam 304. This may really hurt me in another way, and that is the wide ratio gearset, and its big rpm drops when it upshifts. Another thing that sucks with the wide ratio gearset in the 998… when you stomp it into a downshift, it redlines. Kicking it down into passing gear on the highway gets me an instantaneous shift light. First is low … but Second is lower too .. and farther away from 3rd…But thats another story. The wide ratio gearset works best with low numerocal or highway gears. Or as cappy calls them “ airplane” gears. I might be swapping the 2.45 low standard planetaries back in with deeper ratio ring and pinions. You see how “ relative” everything really is and a change here then nessesitates a change there… but moving forward, more cam for more rpm and more horsepower… because i have to move up… because i did all i could with stock torque, and run outa good ideas on how to get more, other than boost or nitrous. Which dont seem a likely option goven the hassles and expenses and the fact this is just a cast iron rod 304.
