OK, my boss brings a guy through our shop for a mini tour and he spots my plaque on the wall with the Car Craft spread featuring my '72 AMX. Older guy, so he starts his story of "back in the day" how his '74 AMX had the experimental 304 in it and the only car to beat it was his brother's 428CJ. That AMX was sooo damn fast. Of course he went on about driving a "66" split window vette also so the typical "I really don't know jack shit" type.
Anyway, where the hell did this experimental 304 crap come from? not the first time I've heard this, not even the second time. A couple of Jeep guys had that secret 304 in them as well. So..WTF?

Welp, any AMX!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Motor is Experimental. Since AMXs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are American Motors X-perimental cars!
I have a 304 Javelin. It's never won a race. Wish I had the X-perimental 304 instead.

anyways, I like how so many people had 428 SJs. It was more than likely a 351M. Most just see a big looking Ford engine.

lol most of em don't even know what you said. They just Poll Parrot what they read out of Car Crap Fagazine.
I don't think a 428CJ ever passed thru the County I lived in, let alone anyone in it ever owning one.
Oh I'm sure there's stories out there. but....
and this guy with the X-304 and 428CJ I'd bet my house that my reg 304, that never won a race and lost to half blown up Chevettes would beat anything him or anyone he ever knew had. Those are the kinda guys you get easy wins from

Kinda like boss 302’s... real ones? Yeah they actually made maybe 10,000 engines worth of parts for the whole program. Maybe 4000 cars including mercury actually got one. Any mustang with any 428, cj or otherwise, is super rare. More likely to find a 390 and those are pretty few.

It seems like most Ford enthusiast around here tend to think the 427 (side oiler, of course) was a better engine out of the box than the 428. From all I can tell, the only claim to fame for the 428 CJ/SCJ is its rarity and cool sounding name.

The Hottest Mustang in my area back in the day had a modded 351 Cleveland. Most Stangs were 6 banger, 289/302, then came the 351W. "Big Blocks" were just unheard of.

From all I can tell, the only claim to fame for the 428 CJ/SCJ is its rarity and cool sounding name. The 427 is hands down a better race engine on bigger bore alone. Head choice here is the game changer, with low rise medium rise, high rise , tunnel port and sohc choices. The 428 cj was intended as a hi torque street killer. Not a hi rpm twister. Each has its merits. Whats best? Sohc kicks everythings nuts in.

The "135" Series Mustangs were kinda like the '69 Hurst AMX cars the way I read all the stuff. The one pictured below was delivered to Parma Heights Ohio. The below Registry page says about that 135 car # 8F02R135055 : "The current location of this car is unknown. Ford documentation describes the car as having been delivered to Southwest Ford Sales of Parma Heights, OH. It was last seen in Florida by a former owner." www.428cobrajet.org/

Whats best? Sohc kicks everythings nuts in. The mythical "cammer", the engine that caused massive wailing, gnashing of teeth, and rending of garments (not fair!) at GM and Chryco.

The only thing I hate about the Cammer is, it was the nuthuggers dream engine on MySpace automotive forums. Everyone who never raced, let alone changed their own oil, loved them. Hence hate.

My silly old self likes this kind of historical stuff... From the Super Cobra Jet Mustang Registry web site, they have a scan of the vintage document that shows where the 50 cars went to and who got what VINS, including the one that went to Parma Heights Ohio. I'd say this was sent to the NHRA to make the cars legal in Super Stock and prove the 50 car requirement had been met. It's a 3 page pdf file, I made a single jpeg image of just the dealers and VINs, so this picture is not of the entire 3 page document.
