Overall the idea is correct. Special consideration is nessesary. We could argue the design merits or demerits forever, but your best off paying attention to detail. Assuming “ its good” can hurt you, same as assuming “ its bad”. Better to know. Is there oil coming out of the holes? Is the gear made in china? Do you have to hammer the distributer down into your crown/ bullqueer cover? Do you have a heavy “ hi pressure” relief spring to shred your new gears on breakin? Are you using oil with no zddp? Plenty of details need to be “ considered” not just making sure oil gets through all the sham aftermarket parts that are out there. So msd has a pretty complete checklist there. I thank them for that and think they should include that as a notice in every amc distributer they sell...One thing you cant do much to check is the overall quality and service expectancy of the unknown distributer gear your trying to use, and many times this is the root cause of failure.

I almost expected to get to the bottom of the Holley / MSD page and see this I made last year:

I figure if you look in the pump mounting hole and have oil coming out of the cam gear when your priming with a drill, you might be ok. I say this because i used to work on all the passages to the point of having copious amonts of oil spraying out of the cam gear holes, but still munched a brand new msd distributer gear. Even with excess oil, carefully checked distributer end play, gears with a moderate amount of clearance ( backlash) it still went to hell. I put a used amc distributer gear in there with the same cam gear that the msd distributer gear crapped out against and poof she has worked for years. Not sure what truly caused that failure. But an old amc gear resolved it. So you never know. I dont worry with the amount of oil coming out of the cam gear anymore. It doesnt seem highly critical, and a lot of extra oil hasnt proven beneficial either. So im not convinced. I know they gotta have some oil, i know of a guy who was a fan of red loctite, intill he munched a couple gears when the loctite plugged up the holes in a cam gear. So all in all consider the details and increase your chances. Not a garantee of success buy you gotta try and avoid this problem any way you can.
