I am still having a major issue with new rear main seals leaking. Originally, I had chunks come out of the Fel-Pro brand that is now made in Germany. - This was the first one. I switched over to the MAHLE brand and have now replaced 2 of those and soon to be a 3rd one. I can not tell you how much this sucks. I replace one in the Wagoneer after 400 miles of running with the engine still in the vehicle. Not fun. And, it leaked again after I put it in. So we pulled the engine, flipped it upside down and, I put a older Fel-Pro seal in that did not have "Germany" printed on it. No clue if it will leak or not. Yesterday's adventure was just a normal 360 rebuild and I use a MAHLE in that one. It is now leaking on the start stand. In a purely desperation move, I am dumping a can of magic rear main seal leak repair and expect it not to work at all. theamcforum.com/forum/rear-main-seals-beware_topic106551_page1.htmlGoing back to the original German unit with the chunks out of it... It is possible that the seal reacted with the brake clean that I used to clean the crank before install but that is a stretch. I do remember the crank kinda sticking when I turned it over by had after I installed the rear mains. I can't seem to find any other brands of rear main seals. Does anyone know if there are any other brands out there?

This is why I hate doing stuff anymore. The quality of parts being offered leaves you at square one.

Its great info. Picture documentation is good too. Bad news is a lot of the world gets their stuff from china now . Apparantly china is ok with you putting their junk parts in and having disastrous results. I garantee you there is someone in america that can manufacture those seals if the $ is worth it. Hopefully not bulltear but a market is a market. What kind of lube are you assembling the seals with?

I always put a good bit of oil right on the seal. Same as I do for the front one.
I've never done an AMC, so what's stock in a 73?
My Car sits a lot, when I fire it up, it leaks like Niagara falls. Then once it warms up, it doesn't even drip. lol Is it a rope seal?

Theres your problem. Put some petroleum jelly, bar and chain oil, gear lube , something anything on those crank seals and crankshaft seal contact area. If its dry it will smoke the seal in seconds

I oiled the living shit out of the one that I replaced twice on the Wagoneer and it still leaked. Those were Mahle brand. After running a gallon and a half of gas through the 360 and I now have 2 drops of oil. We will see how it does tomorrow after I get more gas.

Some later seals like those that were on my Cummins diesel needed to be installed dry so it would seat to the crank.

Welp, I just ran the 360 up to 200 degrees after sitting for a couple of weeks and had one drop. Not perfect but I call it good enough. This one started out dripping a drop of oil every 10 seconds or so. You could see it streaming down the inspection plate. Now one drop after 20 min running time after dumping the Blue Devil Rear Main Sealer in. NEJoe sent a tub of this stuff to try. He says that it works on the industrial stuff that he works on. I plan on putting RTV on the outside like I normally do and then coat the lip seal with the grease. We will see what happens. IMG_4247 by Rick Jones, on Flickr I also got the $36.00 SCE brand rear main seal to try. The thing is blister sealed to the cardboard and I was half afraid to cut it out of there. It looks to me like the older FelPro seal with the yellow waxy stuff on the out side and it has the AM letters, SCI letters, and the 3180469 part number on it but it does not have the words "Germany" on it. I am assuming that SCE is getting it from the old FelPro supplier. So, I think I found the seal that I am going to use eventually. I just need to find a better price.
