Out in my building where I work on electronics and whatnot, I have for way too long heated it with space heaters and cooled it with a window shaker A/C unit. Needless to say, the power bill for that arrangement wasn't especially economical. So a couple of weeks ago on a lark I bought a $500 240VAC 12K BTU mini split heat pump on ebay. It was a little time consuming to install since I opened up a wall in order to hide all of the refrigerant lines and wiring and make it somewhat tidy.
But I've got to say, it works pretty damn good. Today is the first day, and it's only in the low 40s here right now. The real tests will be 1) how it does on those rare days when it gets down into the 20s overnight and 2)the test of time. So far it's as quiet as a church mouse, and the system seems to be pretty responsive. If it really works out, I may have to install a couple in the house. Though for the house proper I will probably spring for Daikin of Mitsubishi units.

I just put in a "double header" Daikin unit in my new office + bathroom addition... agreed, these work very well, with no complaints so far.
