Engine Codes 1966-1969:
"H" = 290 2V 9.0:1. 1966, 67, 68, 69.
"N" = 290 4V 10.0:1 1966?, 67, 68, 69.
"Z" = 343 4V 10.2:1 1967, 68, 69.
"S" = 343 2V 9.0:1 1968, 69.
"W"= 390 4V 10.2:1 1968, 69.
After 1969:
"H" = 304 2V 1970 +
"N" = 360 2V 1970+
"P" = 360 4V 1970+
"V" = 401 2V 1973, 74 International Harvetser
"X" = 390 4V 1970
"Y" = 390 4V 1970 Rebel Machine
"Z" = 401 4V 1971 +
Here is a photo of the "H" engine code. The only way to tell the difference between the 290 2V and 304 2V is by the year code.
The "Z" codes are the same deal.
The "N" codes (290 4V & 360 2V) are the worst. This one could be
correct for a few years because the "2" designation is correct for a '69
290 4V and two different years for the 360 2V engine.
The AMC 401 engines used in International Harvester had 2V carbs.
The blank one was attached to a late 360 replacement block. I can't
remember if the "R" code tag was attached to it as well or not.

The tag will break down as follows:
1st Digit is the YEAR
2nd & 3rd Digit is the MONTH
4th Digit matches 7th Digit of the VIN (engine size)*
5th & 6th Digits match DAY OF MONTH engine built
=================
FIRST DIGIT is YEAR 1=1968; 2=1969; 3=1970; 4=1971; 5=1972; 6=1973; 7=1974
Other early years:1=1959; 2=1960=; 3=1961; 4=1962; 5=1963; 6=1964; 7=1965; 8=1966; 9=1967
Other later years:8=1975; 9=1976; 1=1977; 2=1978; 3=1979; 0=1980
Final end run years:1=1981 VIN Code B; 2=1982 VIN Code C; 3=1983 VIN Code D; 4=1984 VIN Code E5=1985 VIN Code F; 6=1986 VIN Code G; 7=1987 VIN Code H; 8=1988 VIN Code J=================
SECOND & THIRD DIGIT are MONTHS: 01=Jan; 02-Feb; 03=Mar; 04=Apr; 05=May; 06=Jun; 07=Jul; 08=Aug; 09=Sep; 10=Oct; 11=Nov; 12=Dec
*Note production for the new models would begin in August, so the date could begin in 07-08.
FOURTH DIGIT IS THE ENGINE CODE AND MATCHES YOUR 7TH DIGIT OF VIN
FIFTH & SIXTH DIGITS ARE DAY OF MONTH MANUFACTURED
Example: Here is a new one in to rebuild from a full size Jeep Truck
The tag is embossed: 410N15
The first digit is the year so a "4" could be a 1971, 1962,or a 1984. I am assuming a 1984 but once I get it apart, I can find more dates here and there to double check.
The Second and third digits are the month which is "10" indicating October.
The fourth digit is "N" indicating a 290 4BBL or any 360 2BBL. Seeings how the numbers "360" is embossed on the side of the block, I am thinking it is a 360 2 barrel.
The fifth and sixth digits are a "15" indicating that the engine was assembled on the 15th day of the month.
So assuming that it is 1984 360 (and not a 1971) this engine was a 1984 360 2 barrel assembled on October 15, 1984.
Welp, I was wrong!! After tearing the engine down and finding 1971 dates on the bearings along with "71" embossed in the heads makes it clear that this engine was built in 1971 for a 1972 Jeep Pick Up. So this engine was assembled on , October 15, 1971.
"H" = 290 2V 9.0:1. 1966, 67, 68, 69.
