Just made another run, this time in my big truck ('91 3500HD, 454/4L80)with my 20' tilt deck trailer enclosed. It ran OK, but I blew two tires on the trailer, so I replaced all of them that were left after the second one. Trans cooler line came loose a couple of times, but didn't pop off all the way, thankfully. I just spent $$ on a new transmission. The main charge wire to the alternator broke once, necessitating roadside repair. Got an average of 6mpg or so, grossly overloaded. Total weight was 28,000lbs. I don't advocate overloading a vehicle to such an extent, but, I have no way to weigh it until I get past Troutdale, OR. The long in the tooth 454 only used about a quart and a half of oil, which is pretty impressive considering the number of hills I had to crawl up in first gear.

The 454 is the great american powerplant. The other stuff is not so special.

I'm certainly convinced that the Chevy big block is a real winner. Never overheated or even threatened to overheat, even on Cabbage Hill in Oregon, or Sherman Hill coming out of Laramie, WY. Both of which are 1/2 hour or longer climbs in first gear. It got up to maybe 200-210. A fresh 496 Mark IV with a roller cam for towing would really be kick ass.

It does help that the guys at GM were smart enough to equip their vehicles with large enough radiators to do the job. It seems like every other brand of vehicle I've ever owned had a radiator that was marginal at best. My one ton has a BIG radiator. My 3500HD has a HUGE radiator. I had that one re-cored a few years ago. The radiator shop had to order a motorhome/P30 four row core to do the job. Score one for GM on that. It's kinda too bad that GM discontinued the real 3500HD. It's a hell of a truck, and would be downright awesome with a Duramax and a five or six speed manual transmission.
Ford should have finished developing the 385 engines rather than replacing them with their shitty V10. Mopar never really had a street big block. As far as I'm concerned, the B/RB engines aren't big blocks. The Gen II hemi might have made a good truck engine with modern electronic engine management.

I love the Chevy Trucks and how they're built, I've had 2 heavy halfs and they done the work and lasted for decades. Rust is their enemy..... and the 454 is quite a universal engine. Utility, Speed, etc..... The Kid has a 454 out of a truck, peanut port heads, wanna go fast, well, those gotta go, but they're great for the Tow.
Now I have bashed the RB Mopar, BUT I am a fan for the RB Mopar for heavy duty use. Not "track" or being fast. Ton's of Motorhomes used that hunk of Iron quite well. It did great in my HUGE Heavy Imperial. You could tow, have 8 people in the Car and it ran the same as empty. A 305 Nova could run with it in a Race, but hauling a load, I was very pleased.
I love the Factory Air Crap intake, no water or "Dizzy" going thru the intake, "Dizzy" up front, deep block, shallow pan, external oil pump, small water pump insert, etc.
I just can't stand the Motards who think it's some super speed engine. and think their 14sec cars are 10 sec ones. None of them have the balls to go to the track to see their big choppy cam isn't all that and the bag of chips they think it is. It's just great for the Arby's crowd and talkin' shit. Don't dare line up against a Kia tho and get embarassed.

There is my one complaint about the 454; they put the distributor on the wrong end.

On my Imp, the Clutch fan was junk and barely moved, it was shot, I was broke, a kid and didn't know much better. But it never overheated. Pretty wild how that happened. Yet you have guys over on "the other" forum, with $$$$$$ in radiators, fancy fan set ups, $$$ water pumps, water wetter, etc and boil over in the Winter with a little Small Block. LOL wtf?

Imperials were even bigger. Impalas are little tin Junkers compared to an Imperial.

Nevertheless, they installed a radiator that was up to the task. The radiator in my one ton is nearly twice as big as the one in my J10 or Wagoneer. I'm of the mind that the best thing a guy could do for his AMC/Jeep product is to modify it for a Chevy radiator. I do agree that the RB is a very durable engine. They are sturdy and last a long time

I don't understand what these guys are doing. GB pulled a Radiator from some kind of 6 banger Eagle/Spirit in the junkyard, because it was a new Rad for cheap, and his BUILT 360 never went over 180 on the worst day of the year, beating the dick off it, driving it 100s of miles to the track, and racing all day.
Yet there's 100s of overheating threads over there. WTF.

Yeah, I kinda talk shit about dinky AMC radiators, but, I don't think I've ever had one that was prone to overheating, especially 304s or 360s. Wading through deep, loose sand in high range my J10 will cause the temp to rise a bit, but never to a level where I feel the need to shut it down. I thought it had a shroud, but I was wrong. It has no fan shroud and I'm not sure the fan clutch is working properly.

In case I didn't mention it, my Rebel, J10, '78 Wagoneer, and Takeuchi excavator all made it to Kansas intact. When I talked to the carrier, I asked if he would mind if I threw some parts in the trucks, and he was like "go for it. I would" So, I loaded them up thoroughly. The cost for all four with a load of pig iron in each was $5500. Way cheaper than hauling or driving them one by one.
