So, I was thinking all the junk that needs to be hauled half way across the country, and amongst all that junk is a complete 290. Is it good for anything? Should I just snag the timing cover, distributor, cam gear, fuel pump eccentric, and junk the rest?

If it runs you might sell it? I think if i was you id grab all the parts i could use and leave if for the commies. Dont forget the rockers studs an pushrods. Those are worth taking. I’m a hoarder so the longer i think about it the more likely i would be to take the whole thing. It takes effort to disassemble it.

If you have room, I'd haul the whole damn thing. AMC v8s get more scarce every year, in my view. and a lot of us old guys just like small motors anymore.

The Rodney Dangerfield of the late AMC V8's. Yes they are probably worth more in parts than as a whole. Same crank and rods as a 343 etc. etc. Seems the most valuable part is a flywheel if you have one. I think one could be the gas milage leader in a small AMC car with the right combination of parts. I have 2 American's with 290's and I think I am going to put one in my Willys Pickup. Obviously, I vote that you haul the whole thing to your new home.

Hell, I'd take it along for the ride. But then I'm one of the oddballs that would use it if I needed an engine.

Ok so i thought about it. You can bore it to 4.0 bore size, dump a 304 /360 crank in it, you got a 324, the pistons are come out of the block a little but are ok for the .045 composition headgasket…. you have cured the biggest problems with the 290, You get 34 more inches, got a better stroke, bigger bore, more combustion chamber efficiency, thinner low tension rings, cheap pistons, no fancy macine work , a bore, a balance job, it might be really cool. Of course you could do all that to the 304 and the piston deck height is closer to zero. Thats what i’m doing to the FIRST block my EX machinist screwed up. A 304 still kicks a 290’s ass but its not hopeless.

You just need to find more AMC cars and Jeeps to match up with the engines and transmissions that you have.

I've posted it before. But my AMC dream car.
68/69 AMX, 290, Performer intake/cam, headers, I used to want 4 spd, but you guys have me wanting the 5 spd you talk about, and Rick's 4.10 rear end.
Be good on gas, won't break a bunch of parts, wont overheat, so no need for those Ford TAMPON fans. Can actually row thru gears on the street, and not get thrown in jail or killed. Pure fun and won't break the bank.... All the little engine I had ran and ran never broke anything, never blew up, didn't need rebuilt every 500 miles like 90% of ALL 390/401s on "the other forum."

On top of all that, I have running '78 Wagoneer, '78 J10, both 401, my Rebel with a '70 360 in it, my "Barted" '73 Jav/AMX, a '76 parts Wagoneer with 401 and factory A/C, and gawd knows what else. It's gonna cost me a small fortune to get all this stuff out here. But it's not like I can replace any of it. I actually already sold off a few Jeeptrucks as it is.

But it's not like I can replace any of it. That right there, but only you really know what you have. and what time, money and effort you want to spend... It's easy for me to say, bring it. If not, save the "timming" cover and "dizzy" gears at least.

On top of it all, I have a line on a '73 Camaro LT just a mile or so from my place in WA. Prolly just ship it all down here. I already have a buyer on the hook for my house up there.

It aint cheap but you can hire a car hauler to move all your toys. I think they can get six or seven vehicles on one.

It's about $1K per to ship them. I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn't replace any of them for that kind of scratch. Prolly haul all the pig iron on my 20' tilt deck.
