I called around a couple of local muffler shops in town to get an idea of what it might cost to get some new pipes on my Rebel. Holy shitballs, that stuff sure has gone up!. Last time I had full exhaust done was in the early 2000s, and it was $160 out the door. Pipes, mufflers, hangers, labor, tax. The cheap one guessed $550-600, the other was over $900. Damn I feel poor.

Yep and it aint cheap to do yourself either. But if you have a wire welder its worth a try. Even the cheapest turbo mufflers ( summit) are 100-150 a pair. That 160$ exhaust 20 years ago was super cheap. The first exhaust i put on my javelin in the early 80’s was about that much. I’d say if you got headers you can get a universal dual kit from summit and burn it on yourself for half that 900 or maybe even less. Dynomax has some more upscale kits too. Its roadkill dont overdo it.

With inflation, I was expecting it to be in the $400-$450 range. I do have a welder, I don't have a lift. Building exhaust while laying your back sucks noodles.

Tell me about it. Few years back, I spent a whole 90 degree day with my younger son building a system under my truck. Box full of 2-1/2" mandrel bends, 2 mufflers and a chop saw. To weld the topside of the pipes, I'm on my back with a mirror in one hand and mig gun in the other.

Yeah. Just gonna have to suck it up, find some cash, and pay the man.

This is why I tell my kid to buy all cheap exhaust kits, esp universals, off the Summit Junk Table. I've been making my own for decades.....
I buy Mufflers off there just to have and at Swap Meets..
Also I don't weld anything. I just expand the pipes for a tight fit and lightly clamp. I don't put mirrors under my Cars, so it works just fine.

I now have fully cobbled, roadkill approved exhaust. I scavenged the head pipes off my parts Waggie, utilized some of the old exhaust that I had previously scammed off my Barted Javelin, one new Thrush turbo muffler, one piece of straight pipe, and a few clamps. Total extra cost, about $80. Not having to pay $600+ and wait two weeks, priceless.

Very nice, Reb!
I love doing that kind of shit. Hence why I like having lots of shit laying around. Dig thru the ol' Junk Pile and see what you can turn into a useful money saver.
