Didn't Ford also have that 2.9 V6 where the cam rode right in the block with no bearings?

Absence of cam bearings has been around for a long time. Cummins diesels don't use them either and they roll for hundreds of thousands of miles.

IIRC, the 2.9 was lucky to go 100K.

I remember a lot of those 2.9s being lucky to even make it out of warranty. Same for GM's first attempt at cylinder deactivation.
