Need a little help. I have 68 Rambler I just bought. The drivers door shut weird at sellers house. In and out twice and door worked.
Get it home and the drivers door will not open.
No lock in door panel. Spent 4-5 hours today trying to get it open to no avail.
Anyone ever experience this?
Thanks,
Mark

I was trying to help him with it last Saturday. I think that the striker is indexed in the wrong position. I even managed to lock-up a second door on a different American and can't get that one open now either! We have tried to force it open with pry bars while holding both door handles in the open position and no way. Probably the next thing to do is drill the 1000 pop rivets and take the inside door panel off to see if we can flick sometning in the latch. As a desperation move we may have to drill out the 3 bolts that hold the striker plate in.

Had a two-seater do that once. Sprayed lube, and rooted around on the latch from inside and it finally opened. Don't know why.. Welcome to the forum Scooby-Doo..

That's what I said, only add a few words. New car, door stuck. Big s.o.b. so I can't crawl over seats without breaking things.

Seems like I had a similar thing happen to me when I was a teenager. Damn if I can remember how I got it open. I know, real helpful.... I wonder if you can unscrew the striker from the pillar....

Get the door hinges loose if you can. If the latch is in a bind it might relieve it. You may be able to get a fender off or a window down to make it possible. The iyou gotta get the kick panel off to do it. A little boy could probably get in the trunk if your seat back isnt bolted in.The door latch has rods running from the handle. Might get a slim jim to work them. Tool dealers usually have em on the truck.

We can get in the car through the passenger door. The window is down and we have been prodding at the latch and all of that crap. Taking the door off at the hinges is not a bad idea. Some small guy will have to do it. I can't, I am too old now..

I don't wholly recommend this for a collectable car but what has worked in the past for me is, since the window is down and both latches are accessible by a person on the outside, is to get them to put both in the open position and a person on the inside of the car forcibly push it open. Hasn't failed me yet but I have never tried it on a classic car.

Actually tried that already. No Go. Been working on it some every day. You can get to the striker. Barely. Door gap when you pull out is 1/4 inch or so. Trying to turn it with a small punch. Frustrated.

If ya' could get at the end of the striker inside the door, ya' might be able to get the T30 torx in there and turn it out.

Yeah, not open far enough for that. Just can get to the outside of it. Trying to turn it. Not much luck yet.

Got the door open with the help of my step-Dad. An old hot rodder from way back. Still not sure how he did it, but 3 hours of careful cutting, grinding twisting, ect...The latch mounted to the door frame was out. The last bolt I cut with my reciprocating saw from the outside once the door was open around an inch. When we had the latch off the door frame we still had a time getting it off the door. All told spent around 10 hours over the last week trying to get my drivers door open. Crazy!
