I would have a new Challenger if I could, but I think the 2 68's in my garage will provide more fun. Nothing like dropping the hammer on these old muscle cars!

what I really really hate about my javelin is the rear wheelwells. just wont take a decent sized tire. ok so I was stupid taking it out on 245 60 15 bfg t/a's ... that had been going hard in the garage for a few winters. Got some M/T ss street radials. Yeah only 27x10.5... barely fit... but will take full throttle in third gear. Much better control than the bfg banana peels. Lookin fot the 392 fender badges now....

I had no trouble fitting 295/50-15s under the fenderwells of my '73. Still smoke 'em at will.

That is a 26" tire. The humpster does have a much bigger wheelwell, mainly in width So does a hornet or gremlin. Ramblers are limited too. Basically the early cars have small wheelwells. The 68-70 amx or jav has small wheelwellsc both in diameter and width. Limit is 27x10.5 on a 8 inch rim on just right backspacing. A28 wont go without rubbing or ripping when the suspension works... so think about surgery before you do bodywork and paintwork. Its a good investment.

Choices are limited these days for 15 inch tires, but mickey thompson had the widest selection of functional rubber out there. Nitto has 3 sizes in the 555 only. Bfg drag radials are gone. Plenty of choices in modern lowpro 18".. im not into changing to 18 inch rolling stock myself.

Good to know, spud. Personally, I hate big rims. I know they can give better handling, but they look stupid on an older car.

Whats hurting us is tire manufactures have to make tires in 13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20 and more diametrs in a couple dozen treadpatterns. Its stupid how many tires they have to pop off to cater to the auto world. Thats why selection has become so limited for small rims. They have to spread the peanut butter pretty thin.

Also big diameter rim and low profile tires ride hard. They need a morr sophisticated suspension to have a decent ride

Yeah. 20" rims with 2" of sidewall may as well be a foam-filled forklift tire on one of our dinosaurs for ride quality.

Your practically a celebrity in one. Everywhere I go I get stares and honks and thumbs up and stories and meet freindly excited people. If I wheeled a modern muscle or a more popular old musclecar, nobody would notice.

I have no desire to own a new one. I love my slow, old, unlikable by the masses, junk 70s era cars.
It's just when some dillholes talk shit about building something wicked out of the old stuff, and most of the time it'll be lucky to run a 12. They need to tone themselves down a notch. The car is cool, no need to over play it. Like 327s running 14s stock. Nope, never happened, give it a break, just enjoy the damn car for what it is. Cause the new stuff in stock form, 1000 lbs heavier, will wax what most people THINK is wicked.

This kinda shit is what I'm talking about.
{quote]Don't really want to hit the strip, just show Ford's, Chevy's AMC's has some punch,[/quote]
Unless you have experience (wouldn't be asking on gAyMC if they did) in building daily driven, 20+ mpg, low 10 sec, 4000lb AMCs with ac, cruise, power lumbar seats, you're not showing anyone shit. The 80s ended a long time ago.
Like has been said, look at what the factory offers right off the showroom floor that weighs 4000+ lbs and runs 11s and 12s. Start talking a tune and easy bolt ons, your dinosaur that weighs 2800 lbs isn't showing anyone anything, except something to laugh at.

Exactly. I didnt say it was impossible to stay ahead of the 4000 pound new shit. But it is getting a lot tougher. the time has past where the old muscle had no fear.

Yeah. 20" rims with 2" of sidewall may as well be a foam-filled forklift tire on one of our dinosaurs for ride quality. And the Dumbass Automakers want you to tune that out with shocks. This is how get the GM ride.. Harsh yet, floaty.

Ok so there I was. Same stretch of highway, sunday evening, Fresh set of mickey thompson tires. Same dork in the super bee powers up from behind! Ahh yes what luck!! So's I ease into third gear, romp the throttle and he takes the bait, hits it and gets a fender on me...but I got the grip now and throttle him back in...he couldnt hang with the spud javelin. Just to show him it was no fluke we tried again, I dropped to third and his I dunno how many gear auto trans shifted three times to my grab of fourth and I crept ahead again. Close but no cigar mopar boy. The old man got you tonite. Better put that moporker on a diet.
