Pulled the 727 and converter out of my car due to no 3rd gear. Purchased an new Cope 727 with a converter from PTC. Crank is 1977 401 with a Mondello Inertia SFI Flexplate (thicker than stock) and a Midplate .089 thick. Converter arrived, Mopar style w/ ring gear attached and a thick anti-balloon plate..... Test fit #1, to the crank and ring gear hits ring gear. Sent it back, they removed ring gear and returned. Test fit #2, I find the centering hub is not long enough to center into the crank. Verified the diameter matches old converter but center hub only extends forward past the 4 mounting nut surface by .225. (Mounting nuts are approx. .600 thick and center hub just touches crank) Old converter extends approx. .500 past the mounting tabs and the tabs have the nuts welded onto the back side. Explained this to PTC, returned converter, they welded a .250 extension on hub and returned. Test fit #3, today, converter centered well into the crank and sat flush. Installed converter into the trans. (3 of us all confirmed 2 distinct "thumps" into the pump) Lined up the trans about 2 inches from block, using the bolts thru the dowel pins, drew trans to block. Felt resistance w/ 1/2 gap remaining. Tried to turn converter by hand, wouldn't move. Installed the trans cross member to be sure the angle of approach is straight. Backed off the bolts and pulled trans back to approx. 5/8 gap. Converter will turn by hand but is snug. Certainly no 1/8-3/16 free play forward/back but access tough.
I'm sure the converter did not slid forward.... Could the converter be overall too long with the balloon plate and mounting tabs extending forward? Ran out of time today...... Ideas
Thanks, Jerry
