OK, looking for some help from anybody who has some experience with the 3.7 Jeep motors. My daughter has an 05 Liberty, and she met me for breakfast Sunday morning and says...."it takes a long time for the heat to start coming out". I check the coolant level, and it's low like I figured it would be to cause the problem. I had topped it up in the fall after an oil change and winter inspection so to speak. Pulled the dipstick and oil looked good there. DID NOT want to open the oil cap, fearing the worst and low and behold there was the milkshake!! NOTE no slime out the tail pipe though.
So..... do I ASSume automatically it's a head gasket, or do these things have another area where they are known to have gasket issues? I have zero experience with the 3.7 and just hoped somebody here knows them... Thanks

Can you pressure test the cooling system. I had a dodge TC3 that had no heat until I burped the radiator. It was a head gasket so I traded it in.

Yes, It was a very common problem from 2002-early 2005. Just like All the complaints of valve train failures. Have not heard much of intake leakage problems. What is the production date on it? I've done 2, and know I will have to do mine eventually to. There was a lot of running changes on the 3.7 in the 2004 to 2005 years. The 3.7 was a major flop up to about early 2005 in my opinion. If it is a early production 05 you may not be a happy camper when you get to looking at the valve train and timing set. Post the production date when you get a chance and I can tell you what you got. Last one I did a year ago was head gaskets, timing set and new radiator. Did over a weekend for the chick cause she needed it back to drive to a Conference in madison on Monday. Job completed on Sunday and then Totaled on I 90 on Monday. Here's one thing, if you take the serpentine belt off to access oil filter, you have the "more improved" 3.7.

Thanks Joe!.... I think... I'm almost positive it's a 7/04 build date (probably is, based on it being the most fucked up), but I will have to verify that. Getting to the filter sucks, but I never had to mess with the belt. So, about $200 in parts IF there's nothing wrong with the valve train or timing set? I'm not even sure I want to mess with it since I looked at it when she first got it, and there was evidence that the oil was rarely changed so I have to believe it's a mess in the motor...

Bruce, I went back thru all my notes. Hands were working quicker than the mind last night after getting home from work. Need to edit that. The problematic 3.7 were the 02-earlier mid year 2004. That's why when I bought mine I looked for the 05. I still have the receipt tucked in the liberty service manual from Michelle's jeep. I had bought the head gasket kit which was 125 bux. The timing set was 380 bux because all the sprockets were to the point of being shot. With any stroke of luck, you can get by with just the head gasket kit. You have the newer engine so I think you will be fine. The parts I bought were from rock auto.

I appreciate it Joe. Biggest problem is, I need this project like a hole in the head...
