Hey guys. Is everyone sitting down? Well, I actually tried to start the Rogue for the FIRST TIME EVER today... and as expected, SC397's build immediately fired up. But the SCREECH from the starter was horrific!!!
It's a RobbMc mini-starter, attached to God knows whose adapter plate (200-4R trans). But it sits about 1/16" too close to the ring-gear. The starter-shaft actually touches the ring-gear.
So the question is. Do I start "hogging" out one of the bolt-holes so that I can get some clearance here?

Don't hog out holes! The starter drive is probably moving in to the flex plate too far. I am not God but I know that you have a Advance Adapter's kit for the 200R4. Are you using a stock starter or a high torque one?

Rick, I'm not talking about when the starter gear moves (towards the back of the car) to engage with the ring-gear, that distance is ok. I'm talking about the starter being between 1/16" and 1/8"" too close to the crank (side-to-side)... the shaft that extends beyond the starter-gear, actually touched the ring-gear, when the starter is DIS-ENGAGED.

Get the Catman to rebuilt a stock starter for you.

Hmmmm... Well, we know that it didn't hit when it was on the starting stand using a stock bell housing and a high torque starter. Does the holes line up with the holes in the splash plate?

Ok, I got it... "hammer-engineering!!!". Actually I'm thinking that at some point prior to installing the engine/trans in the car, that the very bottom arm of the adapter (where the bottom bolt for the starter is) got "tweaked" a bit. So, using the top bolt in the starter as the pivot-point, I marked the collar on the starter and the bottom bolt hole and took off about 1/16" off one side of the collar, and oblong'd the bottom bolt-hole...
Works like a champ now... gears mesh nicely, and the shaft no longer drags on the flex-plate-gear.
DAMN, this thing sounds good... thanks Rick!!!
