Hi everyone, I've spent the last couple days exploring this site, and sincerely appreciate all the information! I'm building a 360 (from a 78 waggy, 230K) for my CJ8 (T176 4spd, 4.10 gears, 33 tires) and wanting some decent 'pep' AND emphasize low end torque. Although I've built a couple 258's, this is my first V8 build, and the learning curve has been steep. As such, I've been shamelessly scouring several different forums (IFSJA, AMC, JF) for information, ideas and insight, and have reached out to several AMC builders via phone for advice. I happened on to this site after speaking with Rick earlier in the week (thanks again for spending a little time with me!), and have enjoyed 'getting to know' you fellas through your contributions. And, in the process, continued to hate on photobucket. I've been documenting my build on JF, and the thread is already beastly and I haven't even had the block bored/machined yet. Given my crank/install goal is December, I'm taking my time, thinking (perhaps over thinking) about my 'best' approach. Here's what I've got so far, and would like to hear your thoughts and feedback, especially if there are issues.
Overall goal, 9.5:1 CR, run pump gas, 93 ok if necessary. Will occasionally tow distances, frequently be off road, but not a rock hopper or dune climber.
Block/heads/crank hot tanked and miked - no cracks, and will need to go 30 over and 10 under on crank.
Mild port work done on original heads (guide bosses/runners), both intakes and exhaust (did this myself, first time, pucker factor @ all time high). The heads are original to the engine, and are advertised with a 58cc chamber, but will syringe verify that this weekend.
Worked down smog bumps in the exhaust manifolds, planning to reuse
Some oil mods, opened up oil returns in valley, gasket matched oil pump, opened up OP restrictions. Have not drilled anything, yet...
Plans:
Use Wiseco -21 dish forged (plasma-moly rings) with original rods.
Howard's; 259/259 on a 108 +4 LSA Lobe #HM2123245A- 259* at .006, 212* at .050, 132* at .200, .5192 valve lift (possibly go to a 110 LSA, has power brakes, so need enough vacuum@idle to work)
1.6 ratio rocker arms, rollers. Was considering Scorpion pedestal mounts, but Harlands could be a possibility.
Air Gap intake
FI (possibly Sniper, others under consideration as well)
And even though it isn't necessary, I'm planning to use a plate when bored. I've sourced one not too terribly far away, and given all the other things making me nervous about this process, I'll take every bit of 'peace of mind' I can get.
I'm sure I've left out some important information, but appreciate your feedback!
Thanks in advance-
