So I cant figure out what to do to make this work in my 74 Javeln Amx. I upgraded the alternator to 100 amp gm one wire alternator and the voltage gage worked for 10 minutes the melted the back of the cluster. Common sense tells me I need to try and step those amps down before it gets there.
As much as I want to make this work I can add a small after gage trio under the dash so I can monitor everything and deal with this over the winter.
Honestly to just buy a new engine and dash harness that would also be something I would tackle over the winter.
Ideas ,suggestions appreciated Shawn

The factory ammeters are famous for melting down under heavy loads. Bypass it and install a voltmeter (not an ammeter) somewhere.

javetwotone should be able to help you out. I haven't heard from him lately so, he must be out of town. He is a pretty good Wirehead when it comes to the Big Body Javelins.

By using a jumper connected to the 2 poles of the ammeter, the current will flow mainly thru the jumper (lower resistance than the ammeter) and the ammeter may have a small reading (maybe not too). Easy try to do! Adding a voltmeter will help you to monitor if the battery voltage comes to low.

Was never a big fan of primary battery power being hot all the time at the back of the dash on 40 year old gauges, especially original wiring... if you want the ammeter to move (maybe as 401amx1969 says) don't use the original wiring for the ammeter. you need key on power for a voltmeter, not constant batter power, so use ACC power from the fuse block.
