Well it can't all be sunshine, puppydogs and dolphins shitting unicorns shitting rainbows I suppose...
Not long after her return to the roads El Matador developed an off idle stumble and hard starting. Turns out the choke stove inside the exhaust manifold had rotted away and the carb was sucking exhaust gas in through the choke. That carboned up the choke and messed up the choke's thermo spring. Not to mention over heating the carb and messing with it's mixtures... The original manifold may have been able to be saved but thanks to the Jeep guys new ones are cheap enough to not bother. So sense I was going that deep into it I took the opportunity to do some house keeping. The new exhaust manifold is nicely painted with VHT's super high temp header paint. The intake and brackets are all blasted and all dolled up with AMC engine blue. New grade 8 bolts and nuts round out the job as the old ones were tired and rusted all to hell.( I'll see if my luddite ass can get some pics of the work up to show off) Carb got re cleaned and a new choke thermostat. I got her all back together yesterday afternoon. She fired right up on high idle smooth as could be. A blip of the throttle and she settled down to a nice kitten purr. I went through the "bake in" procedure for the manifold paint and took her out for a shake down run. Runs cool, quite and smooth. No issues off idle and starts back up with the tiniest touch of the key. I just need to retorque the exhaust pipe flange as there was a very minor but noticeable leak there. Other then that she's ready to go take on Taurus-es er uh Tauri ? And now that I have a base line I can start adjusting the "timming" and find that sweet spot on the idle needle to get her into the low 14's. But hey it was actually fun. Even with the Big 6 you could park an S-10 in the engine bay. And the results are well worth the effort. So the adventure continues gents.
