Been threw this hole thread, from front to back. I know I read somewhere about sonic testing your block, and where the thin spots are most common, to check those spots well. My 401 got bored 60 over. I'm trying to dice it out on is it usable or not... When I sonic test, is there a spec it go by on the walls so I know if I should spend money on this block? 450hp 6000/6500 rpm tops

I wished that you could bring it over. We could check it out and see what you have.

If I could afford your work, I'd send it with the Alfano and have you knock it together for me. I'm spread so thin, I don't know if I lost my horse, or found a rope. I might not shoot myself in the foot, with your info in pocket. So thanks for the cyl wall sonic testing info. I will put it to good use.

Every AMC'er can afford my work. I would do it for free if I could and had enough time. The parts cost what they cost and the machining costs what it costs. I try to be realistic and have spread sheets on what it really costs to do a engine right down to that extra can of paint and that extra gallon of gas it might take to break it in. The oil, filters, and additive to build one, break it in and change the oil once alone will burn through a hundred bux. You are going to go through that regardless. It just looks like a lot when you really look at the real numbers on what it takes to build a engine.... and break it in. What I was saying is that if you were to bring the block over, we could check it out, have a couple of beers and you would know what you have. That's it. Hell, I would even supply the beer. Off of the soap box now. Sorry, just got s little irritated at the afford my work comment when you don't even know how much my work costs. Over it now, lets move on..

;DSpoken like a true artist. I have machinist here, who charge 1g to 15gs just for a stock rotating assembly. And I've seen your work. I take what I would pay for quality and figured you were way out of my price range. I'd be proud to run one of your motors. And you'd never have to buy the beer. till then

If everybody did the quality of work that Rick (or Spud) does, there would be no AMC horror stories.

Thanks Reb! 58. JCJeep401: Well, we tried to degree the cam in today. Come to find out it is not as advertized. Ramblerman measured 4 times and I pulled the cam and measured 4 times with a digital caliper for a sanity check. It is like they got the exhaust lobes ok but all of the intakes measure .350" With a 1.6 rocker arm ratio the valve lifts works out to be a .560" valve lift. It is suppose to be .527". Funny thing is if you multiply .350" times a 1.5 rocker arm ratio it works out to .525" valve lift... Pretty close.

60. 67RogueXCode: Well he sent the Motorcrap distributor which is a functinal component but every time we try to dyno with one of these we have to mechanically set the full advance by tearing the dizzy apart and bending a tang here and there. They all seem to go to infinity if you don't do something to them. With the Jeep stuff they must have limited it electronically some how. Don't ask me, I just know how to make the smoke come out of wires when it comes to electrical stuff. Anyway to appease Chuck and to keep the stock '67 apperance we decided to go the Pertronics rout with a Crane adjustable vacuum advance. Now everyone is thinking so what is the big deal with the picture. Well I will tell you what the big deal is . The big deal is that the blue tub of grease is genuwine AMC grease by Gawd.. Yep, the label is long gone because it got... greasy and didn't stick any more. You are a lucky man Bob, I don't share my genuwine AMC grease with just anybody. Welp, your distributor is liberally lubed with the stuff so it just don't get much better than that.,.,

58. JCJeep401: Checking out the Reynolds Heads by Edelbrock. The exhaust port doesn't really line up with the gasket as well as the stock port. The issue will be the head bolt if we use the supplied washers. They stick up too high so the header would have to be notched out big time. I will leave the washers out where the exhaust ports are but, I will have to cut the bolts down so that they don't bottom out. Stock Head & bolt. The intake ports are closer. The combustion chambers are quite a bit different. I guess this is where the Edelbrock's are quite a bit better.
