97. SC397: 360 bored and stroked to 397cid. Stock 360 crank off-set ground to 3.66" stroke with 1.85" journal. BJH Vibration Damper and 258 Flywheel. Crank was internal balanced. 3/4"x 1.175" Heavy Metal. NASCAR PANKL 6.200" CONNECTING RODS 1.850"-.855" 4.155" Bore, Racetech Pistons flat top with 6cc valve reliefs. Compression ratio is 12.5:1 Edelbrock heads with Isky Springs 7/16" 1.6 Harland Sharp roller rockers Edelbrock EFI intake and kit to be tuned for E85 fuel. 0ff-set ground journal to fit the NASCAR connecting rods. IMG_6181 by Rick Jones, on Flickr IMG_6272 by Rick Jones, on Flickr The rods are not centered on the pistons. I am not worried at all about it. IMG_6271 by Rick Jones, on Flickr IMG_6183 by Rick Jones, on Flickr Pistons are pretty much zero deck. IMG_6285 by Rick Jones, on Flickr I got Stickshifter to machine the block and heads for the extra head bolts. Mike Luke gives me a really good deal on the HS rockers and they seem to work well. IMG_6313 by Rick Jones, on Flickr The cam is a re-ground Crower roller cam by Bullet. That cam has a bit more lope than I expected and sounds nice! How much compression? When's the dyno session?

12.51:1. It is running on 110 race fuel right now. I want to run it on E85 with the 750+ E85 carb that NEJoe build for me next. Then I will swap out my starting distributor with a Pro-Comp one to make sure that it works. I want to dyno it with the carb first them switch over to the EFI system. I am still waiting for bigger injectors from Edelbrock for the E85.

Sorry to say Spud that I used the California 304 as a donor for my Pure Stock 360. The block is in the scrap pile but these parts will live on in the 360.. Main Caps and bolts - Had to sort through 3 sets before I pulled them out of the 304 and luckily they worked. Oil Slinger Fuel Pump Eccentric Distributor Gear Head bolts The crank and cylinder heads will go to good use in something else.

It is a shame to scrap a 304 block. Hey ya wanna sell that sweet amc dyno mule 304? I’m sick of trying to build a 304. Or more correctly sick of trying to find a competant machinist.

Thats bad news. I have given up on finding anyone in texas who can machine engine parts anymore. I picked up whats left of my 304 stuff from the brain dead butcher who ruined it. Is the california block junk? I’m really depressed about my horribly failed 304 projects. The current state of affairs is just pitiful. You are lucky to have competant machinist in your area. These fags down here are chevy or scrapheap. The California block now has no main caps because it was 4th source to find a set that fit the 360 block. Which means that it would probably take that many more to find a set to fit the 304 block. I have 2 more 304's plus the new one. One is really clean and probably a runner. The other is a rebuilder. $200.00 for the rebuilder if you want it. I am going to freshen the Dyno engine up and sell it as a new one so, it will have a new engine price tag on it. I plan on putting the runner on my starting stand and firing iut up to see how it runs and price that one accordingly.

117. PureStockish360. for my SC/360. Done.. Finally! I had a hell of a time with this one. First off I had it on the starting stand and it did start but didn't run right at all. It was backfiring through the carb every now and then so I swapped distributors and carbs but nothing helped. Backfiring means a timing issue to me. So my last resort was to pull the timing cover and look at the timing set. Viola! Found the problem. Somehow I had the timing set off. I was trying to retard the cam by 4 degrees and somehow I was off by 2 teeth. Got it back together and it ran better but not right. Great, did I bend valves when the timing set was off? Pulled the plugs and found out that both #2 and #3 had not been firing. Did a compression check and both cylinders were good. Stuck the plug on the wire and laid it against a ground and it did fire. WTF! My second last resort was to swap out the MSD box and finally, it runs like it should. Click on it to hear it. IMG_6479 by Rick Jones, on Flickr

It really sounds purestockish! It sounds pretty tame but very responsive. I have tried that cam in a 70 390 and it sounded a bit more rumbly and lopey than your does. In my memory at least. But then again i ran it with open headers. Very interested in seeing some race results on this one. ( not rushing just saying, this is a great project!) i was also curious about the weights of the rods and pistons, compared to stock, and if the crank had to have weight removed from the counterweights to balance them, or if you thought about trying to lighten up the crank. I think the stock crank is heavy as hell and it could be possible ( given a talented crank guy or shop) to loose a great deal of non critical weight… which is a great way to add performance in a “ stockish” engine.

n2ojoe can pipe in here but I think that Larry with the blue SC360 had his crank lightened. His car has been my guide for building my car but I am cheap and used the parts that I had with the exception of the connecting rods. For the heck of it, I will ask both the crank machinist and Chuck about it. I will have to see what the difference in weight is between the stock rods and the K1 rods. Yea, I like the idle quality and lack of lope. I also put the baby Summit cam in a 69 390 and it did sound slightly more lopey than my 360 but not by much. I need to put the Pertronics distributor in yet along with my rebuilt Carter Super Pump. I bought a kit and rebuilt one. We will see if it works. theamcforum.com/forum/carter-fuel-pump-rebuild-kit_topic118326.htmlI need to fix the busted studs in my exhaust manifolds but I am using a par of Free-Flows that I ported the air tube hump out of them. To top it off I will try the Motocraft carb that n2ojoe built for me and because Larry is using a Edelbrock on his SC360, NEJoe is building a cheater Carter AFB for me. It will be a 750cfm with a 500 or 600 cfm part number stamped on it.
