That would work. Do you have a extra wheel you could match balance to it? Anything would work, a six cylinder flywheel might be a close starting point. If not i will wait for reb’s flywheel to show and send it to you. Or i think i already have a six cylinder flexplate i could get boxed up? One thing for sure i won’t be using this pioneer piece of shit. The ring gear is noisy as hell.

Actually I do. I think I have a new 304 flex plate that I will go get matched for you. I will take a couple of different ones over there and he can match it up to the best one.

This was interesting. The original flywheel was 66 grams heavy where I have it marked. The new Flex Plate was 88 grams heavy in the same location - at the welded on weight. The machinist removed 22 grams by drilling the weight. You can see that the 6cyl Flex plate would have to had metal added in the locations of those holes. Fun stuff and it only cost you $50.00 and some beers for me! IMG_2171 by Rick Jones, on Flickr IMG_2172 by Rick Jones, on Flickr

Sounds like a lot better deal that having to pull the engine and tear it down and have it balanced .😁

22 grams. I wonder what the wheel i have on there now has for actual “ counterweight”... of course i wonder about this just about anytime i put on a flywheel, and have no way of knowing. I had an adventure with my 290. At the point where i was going to truly race it, i bought a mondello steel wheel for it, under the pretense that it would be made specific for a 290. Not sure of mondello’s actual course of action but when it was installed it shook pretty bad. I returned it for them to recheck, and it came back and shook the same. I decided to race it anyways. It went a round or two and shook the pressure plate loose. I removed it and compared it visually to some other steel wheels i have and it was drilled similar to mcleod 401 and a mystery 390 steel wheel i have. I looked at the original 290 wheel and it appeared to have just a couple small holes drilled in it, similar to some six cylinder wheels i have. I have a zero balance mcleod wheel ( for a six) , so i tried that wheel. Much smoother than the mondello wheel, i wouldnt say smooth as silk, but runable.. I put the alleged “290”mondello wheel on a 401 and ran it. It was plenty smooth. 22 grams isnt a bunch, but is significant. And where it is is important too...Its all very mysterious to me. If or when i build a “monster” 304, i may just take the mystery out and get the crank slugged so i can use a zero balance wheel, either flywheel or flexplate. Make it simpler if i wanna change out a cracked flexplate or swap in a stick transmission.

I started to learn about the balancing thing when I was 19 in 1975 and my uncle was swapping out my 290 for a 360. Just by luck, the flywheel fit because it was a 1970 360. Neither one of us knew anything about the crank flange change in '72 and all of that. At the very first start up, I noticed a vibration that wasn't there before. My uncle said it was because the 360 was a bigger engine - he didn't know about the balancing thing either. I drove and beat the shit the car for 60,000 miles that way. It didn't take long for the rear main seal to leak but luckily it didn't grenade. It was sort of a rev limiter for me. I learned to shift really fast. LOL! I also learned the hard way about it being a stupid idea to put 290 heads on a 360 to bump up the compression ratio. I did the work in our Pig barn with cob webs hanging, bugs flying around, and the lovely aroma of swine in the air. Hey, I was 19 and didn't know anything. Learned all kinds of things about head bolt sizes, valve sizes, compression ratio etc. etc. About this time, I was buying every piece of information that I could find on AMC engines. Lots of BS in there but yea, shit has to be balanced.

I understand where amc engines need the extra weight posistioned on the wheel. If it wasnt such a hassle removing the trans and such, i suppose a guy could trial and error balance it, by bolting on a progressive amount of weight, like adding washers, untill it smoothed out. I guess if it came to such a nessesity. Like if he had plenty of time and determination and no easier way

I dropped your cam and lifters off at FedEx today. Soon, you'll be stomping new Mustangs so badly that even the guys who sprung for a VooDoo motor are gonna feel like they wasted their money. I think Sped Ex lost the cam. Nothing here yet. Stuff from 3 hrs away in Columbus can take a week to ship, but stuff from the other side of the Country usually takes 2 days lol.
