Well day 3 was interesting. At least he got here at 9:45 to start at 10:00. I know, it is all perspective. 10 actually works for me because I can get some shit done before he gets here. Today's project was insulating and adding 2x4's flatwise to the tops if the rafters in the addition. I had started to build in a attic floor and I figured that he could handle the job of adding filler pieces in between the stringers that I had put down. He got the insulation put in ok but that is a no brainer. I told him what I wanted and he measured them all and wrote them down. I said that is fine but I can only remember like 3 numbers at a time but, do it your way if that works for you. Come to find out that no one has ever showed him to run a circular saw. I kinda feel bad about that. Hell, I was scaring the shit out of my self with a Skill saw at about age 10. His old man (my Bro) was a carpenter for Christ sake. I guess that he didn't show him jack shit. Not to bad mouth the dude but the High School kid that helped me for a while was way ahead of my Nephew at half his age. So I didn't check on him for a couple of hours and went over and asked him how it is going while looking at his pile of miss-matched lengths of 2x4. It was pretty simple job. Most of them were 18something inches long and there were some at around a foot long. I picked up the 2 1/2' piece and asked him where that one went. He said. Oh that one goes beside this one (that was 18"). I said, Really? Show me. So up in the rafters we go and his response was something like, I musta measured wrong. So I went back in after he cut that one and was up trying to nail them down. A solid half of them were too long. So being a bit prickish I said, who measured these? He said a Monkey I guess. Then I asked him who the fuk cut them. He didn't respond because I let it be known that I was pissed. Then I told him not to fuk up any more. So I go back over again after I hear him pound a few nails and I see that he is nailing a board down that is 2" short of what it is supposed to be. I don't even remember what I said but I made him rip all the ones that were too short up and held one in my hand and told him, well there is a buck that you just waisted. Then I measured three lengths, said them out loud and made him repeat the lengths back to me. I went down, cut the 3 to length and took them back up to him and told him that the lengths are wrote on each one. At the end of the day we sat down by the furnace to warm up and I said to him, don't worry we will make a human out of you yet. Again, I don't think that anyone has shown him how to actually do anything.

You are doing a good thing for him Rick. Some of these folks have never had someone tell them how it really is and how to do something with their hands. The skills you gave him today will be with him for the rest of his life.

Well he did pretty good yesterday. We started working in the rafters in the morning but after a hour I was froze so I put him on block cleaning. I told him some of the whuts and whys and he asked good basic questions and he actually did a good job of cleaning up the block. Feeling a lot better about the progress now.

hey anybody needs a little break in. just saying. he might be great in a month. or maybe missing a finger who knows Yea he is doing pretty good now. Remembers everything I tell him and then goes home and looks it up on the interweb to learn more. And I don't have to tell him everything twice. His carpentry skills need more experience but he is getting there. He has a "lazy eye" and I think he has a hard time seeing. Shit, half the time I can't tell if he is looking at me or not. He doesn't wear glasses but I am sure that he is suppose to.

Seems like the work relationship is moving in the right direction It is. He got to my place before I did yesterday and he was shoveling the walk from the house to the shop before I got home and before he had to start working. He is soaking it all in and is doing pretty well now. Figured i had to defend him a little after that cute little video. LOL!
