Maybe you had the first week new employee jitters?

Not to take over Rick's post, but I just started on a similar journey. This is having my grandson work for me, he is 12. Today was day 1, and so far I am impressed enough to have him come back next week. He worked from 9:30 to 4:00 without bitching one time. He was 1/2 half hour late, but that was my son's issue, LOL. The kid, Aidan, did some sorting of mixed up hardware, cleaned(deep clean) my small manual mill, and then did some labeling of a lot of storage containers. His spelling will live on for sure. ;-) The point is, I am satisfied with the results so far. He gets to earn some money and I get to spend time with him and break him into the working world.
BTW, I bought a time clock from an auction last week so it make time keeping that much easier. I also plan on using it to track my time on all the different projects I am working on. The other plan is to get the kid his own savings account so I can direct deposit his earnings. Hopefully he will learn to save money and understand the value of his time and money.

Great way to start out for him. He won't even have to get a degree to land a 100k+ year a job with a work ethic and history.
One of my Son's friends spent a couple of years trying to get out of the 2nd grade. He's not real smart, or even skilled. BUT he will work 16 hrs a day 7 days a week, in 100+ to -50 temps and not complain. So once he was lucky to get out of grade school, he didn't do any other Schooling. He had 4 years of working for his Uncles Farm, which he worked 7 days a week at. Hence why he has a $40,000 truck in HS all paid for by him. He was offered a job for $44 an hr to start, and in some area's he got prevailing wages of $65 an hr. They don't give one fuck about Schooling at all, or if you can read. Just show up. They didn't care if he had a High School diploma either. Once again, just show up and be productive.
By 25 he has a 200k house (which is a very nice place in our very cheap housing market) a 80k brand new truck, and 50k in side by sides and 4 wheelers....

I really like the time clock idea, and keep paperwork on him. He can use it on a resume, unless he opens his own business.

Here's a picture of the time clock. Brings back memories. BTW, the drill bits next to the clock are new purchases from an auction. The very first one weighs 24 pounds and is 3-7/16". I need big holes, some times.

Gotta love those Auctions, great tools for practically nothing. Funny thing is, when I go to these auctions, I'm bidding against 90 y/o guys that are just going to be auctioning the shit back off in a short amount of time.

Well the Nephew has come around 110%. In fact he is doing so well that he landed a full time job and will be leaving me. LOL! Great for him. He starts next Monday at a Truss Manufacturing company with the office located in Tecumseh MI. He will be an office boy managing 4 computer screes doing all kinds of shit. Now I have to find someone to help me finish my shop!

My kid got sure lucky with vacation. He started at the Plant in Sept and had a week's vacation to use before Jan. Started at $25. Then After Jan, he got 3 weeks vaca for the next calendar year. He's been there a year and a half and making 27 an hr now. He's a Working Supervisor, so if there isn't enough people, which there never is, he has to work on the floor.
Nice thing tho is unlimited OT. Not many places like to pay that..... Sundays are Double Time, Holiday's are Triple. So he's been working 7 days a week and every Holiday he can.

20 y/o neighbor kid was just offered a Maintenance job at my Son's plant for $24 an hr to start. He turned it down cause it was the Midnight shift.
My Kid owns a house, and bought two brand new cars. One Cash, the other is 0% interest for 4 years, so he's letting his money grow in stocks and pays $750 a month for the car and has over a couple $1000 left over a month after all his bills and fun going out....
Dunno what's not appealing about that. Guess he'd rather stay living at Grandma's, with his Dad living in the basement, and drive junk 2005ish Fords with 300k miles on them, rusting out and racking up DUIs.

It's crazy how they ALWAYS have an excuse to not work a job....they have been enabled to be the victim their entire lives.

It's amazing cause this kid is a talentless loser. Failed Kindergarten of all things, he just kinda graduated last year and gets offered a very high paying job for this area.
